Oxygen and ionic transport in hydrogel and silicone-hydrogel contact lens materials : an experimental and theoretical study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The transport of oxygen, water and naked ions of Na+ and Cl− across two kind of hydrogels materials, made of a conventional hydrogel (Hy) based on hydroxyethyl methacrylate (pHEMA) and a silicone hydrogel (Si-Hy) material containing siloxane moieties ...

Use of polyethylene glycol coatings for optical fibre humidity sensing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Humidity induced change in the refractive index and thickness of the polyethylene glycol (PEG) coatings are in situ investigated for a range from 10 to 95%, using an optical waveguide spectroscopic technique.

Terahertz-based system for dehydration analysis of hydrogel contact lenses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The use of terahertz-based techniques has grown very fast since they are capable of performingevaluations at molecular level, being very suitable for the analysis of biological samples and bioma-terials such as those for contact lenses.

Control of Surface Wettability via Strain Engineering

open access: yes, 2013
Reversible control of surface wettability has wide applications in lab-on-chip systems, tunable optical lenses, and microfluidic tools. Using a graphene sheet as a sample material and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations, we demonstrate that strain ...

Studies of a weak polyampholyte at the air-buffer interface: The effect of varying pH and ionic strength [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We have carried out experiments to probe the static and dynamic interfacial properties of $\beta$--casein monolayers spread at the air-buffer interface, and analysed these results in the context of models of weak polyampholytes.

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Electrowetting: from basics to applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Electrowetting has become one of the most widely used tools for manipulating tiny amounts of liquids on surfaces. Applications range from 'lab-on-a-chip' devices to adjustable lenses and new kinds of electronic displays. In the present article, we review

Bio‐Inspired Magnetically Tunable Structural Colors from Elliptical Self‐Assembled Block Copolymer Microparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cephalopod‐inspired photonic microparticles with dynamic structural coloration are fabricated via confined self‐assembly of linear block copolymers into ellipsoids containing stacked lamellae. Embedded superparamagnetic nanoparticles enable rapid magnetic alignment, restoring vivid, angle‐dependent color.
