On contact numbers in random rod packings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Random packings of non-spherical granular particles are simulated by combining mechanical contraction and molecular dynamics, to determine contact numbers as a function of density. Particle shapes are varied from spheres to thin rods.

Tooth-root-stress evaluation for plastic gears considering effect of contact ratio under load

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Mechanical Design, Systems, and Manufacturing
In a plastic gear pair, the low rigidity of plastics can lead to a higher actual contact ratio due to tooth deflection under load compared to the geometrical one. This phenomenon contributes to a decrease in tooth root stress.

On the properties of contact binary stars

open access: yes, 2004
A catalogue of light curve solutions of contact binary stars has been compiled. It contains the results of 159 light curve solutions. Properties of contact binary stars were studied by using the catalogue data. As it is well known since Lucy's (1968a,b)

Determination of a representative food mass-to-surface area ratio (mF/A) for estimating migration values of food contact substances in single use food contact articles marketed in the United States

open access: yesFrontiers in Food Science and Technology
When reviewing the safety of food packaging, safety assessors must determine the migration levels of a food contact substance (FCS) from the packaging into the contained food products.

Experimental and numerical study on permeability hysteresis of a single fracture subjected to loading and unloading of confining pressure

open access: yesYantu gongcheng xuebao
Groundwater flow in fractured rock mass mainly depends on the hydraulic conduction characteristics of fracture network, especially for low permeability rocks, such as granite.

Orion Routing Protocol for Delay-Tolerant Networks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In this paper, we address the problem of efficient routing in delay tolerant network. We propose a new routing protocol dubbed as ORION. In ORION, only a single copy of a data packet is kept in the network and transmitted, contact by contact, towards the

Mass-Ratio Determination in Contact Binaries [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1974
In the wake of recent theoretical work on contact systems (e.g. Whelan, 1972; Biermann and Thomas, 1972; Lucy, 1968), it is of importance to determine fundamental data from observations. This has been done recently by several groups in analysing light curves (Mochnacki and Doughty, 1972; Hutchings and Hill, 1973; Wilson and Devinney, 1973), and it is ...

CCD Photometry of Low Mass Ratio Contact Binary FP Boo - IV [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2009
We present new B, V, and R CCD photometric light curves for the low mass ratio contact binary FP Boo. A new photometric solution and absolute physical dimensions of the system were derived by applying the Wilson-Devinney program to our observed light ...

Development of contact detection method between tool cutting edge and workpiece (Influence of contact state onto vibration characteristics and contact detection during milling operation)

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Mechanical Design, Systems, and Manufacturing, 2023
The contact between a tool and workpiece during machining has a significant effect on the vibration characteristics of machine tools. This study proposes a method for detecting contact between a tool and workpiece, and demonstrates applications of the ...

Effect of solid thermal conductivity and particle-particle contact on effective thermodiffusion coefficient in porous media [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Transient mass transfer associated to a thermal gradient through a saturated porous medium is studied experimentally and theoretically to determine the effect of solid thermal conductivity and particle-particle contact on thermodiffusion processes.
