Statistics of the separation between sliding rigid rough surfaces: Simulations and extreme value theory approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
When a rigid rough solid slides on a rigid rough surface, it experiences a random motion in the direction normal to the average contact plane. Here, through simulations of the separation at single-point contact between self-affine topographies, we ...

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Optimal Design of Spur Gears With Increased Contact Ratio

open access: yesJournal of Mechanical Engineering
The study is devoted to optimal design of gears with profile contact ratio εα ≥ 2. Optimality criteria formulated as follows: the contact stresses in the pitch point must take a minimum value when all constraints are met, first, when the profile contact ...

General Properties of Contact Binary System for Mass Ratio Distribution [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Astronomy and Space Sciences, 1999
With a total 761 contact binary systems in Svechnikov & Kuznetsova(1990)'s cat- alogue, their physical properties by the mass ratio are inverstigated - for the early CE type with a common radiative envelope and the late CW type with a common convective ...

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.

V717 Andromedae: An Active Low Mass Ratio Contact Binary

open access: yesThe Open Journal of Astrophysics
Multi-band photometric analysis of the contact binary V717 Andromedae (V717 And) is presented. The system is found to be an extreme low mass ratio system (q = 0.197) with high inclination (i = 84.5 deg), moderate degree of contact (27%) and near equal ...

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...

Finite-element analysis of contact between elastic self-affine surfaces

open access: yes, 2004
Finite element methods are used to study non-adhesive, frictionless contact between elastic solids with self-affine surfaces. We find that the total contact area rises linearly with load at small loads.
