I. A circular area on a semi-infinite body is assumed to be heated at a constant rate from the time t=0 on. The development of the temperature in this area and in its surroundings is calculated with certain simplifications. II. In a sliding contact the heat generated by friction is limited at every point to the time of contact.

Journal of Tribology, 1993
Under rolling-sliding contact, specimens have different failure forms, such as pitting and spalling etc. The surface roughness of specimen in contact has a strong influence on the failure form. The elevated contact temperature produced by a rougher surface is one of the key factors in producing changes in failure form.

Temperature Dependence of Contact Angles
Nature, 1965THERE are very few recorded observations on the temperature coefficient of contact angles1. These suggest that the coefficient is very small, if not zero, which is at first sight surprising. Adam2 has pointed out that, as a consequence, “it appears that temperature affects the surface tension and the adhesion to the solid to very nearly the same ...

Temperature Development in a Heated Contact With Application to Sliding Contacts
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1952Abstract The calculation of the development of the temperature in and around a heated contact is reduced to the use of some simple formulas for certain fundamental variables and to making readings from a diagram. Applications are made to a contact that is heated by the current and to circular or oval heat sources (for example, friction ...

Contact Measurements of Blackbody Temperatures
2020The chapter is devoted to measuring the temperature of blackbodies using contact thermometers with traceability to the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90). The main types of contact temperature sensors (platinum resistance thermometers, thermistors, and thermocouples) applicable to measuring the blackbody temperature are reviewed.

Thermal Contact at Low Temperatures
Nature, 1958MECHANICAL heat switches are becoming of increasing importance in low-temperature calorimetry, and in order to study thermal contact both for this practical application and from interest in the mechanism of heat transfer, we have built the apparatus sketched in Fig. 1.

Surface Temperatures in Sliding Contact
A S L E Transactions, 1964A study was made of the surface temperatures generated by friction in a sliding system—a fixed constantan ball riding on a rotating steel cylinder. Using the principle of the Herbert-Gottwein dynamic thermocouple, time-average as well as instantaneous surface temperatures were determined.

Contact temperature of a skidding tire
Wear, 1975Abstract The rate of heat generation in the contact patch of a skidding tire is quite high. An approximate solution is derived for the interface temperature and the rate of heat flow into the tire. The results show that after a fraction of a second essentially all the generated heat flows into the pavement and the interface temperature has reached a ...
