Flow dynamics in bioreactors containing tissue engineering scaffolds

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 2008
AbstractBioreactors are widely used in tissue engineering as a way to distribute nutrients within porous materials and provide physical stimulus required by many tissues. However, the fluid dynamics within the large porous structure are not well understood.

Acoustic energy flow in lined ducts containing uniform or “plug” flow

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1973
In connection with the method (used in simple insertion loss models) of relating, approximately, the perturbed duct field to the acoustic field radiated from the duct termination, expressions have been formulated for the energy flows associated with individual modes, according to certain definitions.

Computation of Flows Containing Edge Vortices

1988
In this paper we present and discuss results from several investigations of the authors and co-workers over the past three years. The studies are primarily directed at the numerical solution of the Euler equations discretized upon a mesh for the case of vortices shed from the leading edge of a delta wing. The speeds in the various cases range from zero

Flow in Straight, Frictionless Containers

1993
Some fundamental phenomena of gravity and centrifugal separation of suspensions are readily illustrated by the flow field solution in the simple geometries considered in this chapter which are an idealization of the configurations introduced by Figs. 1.1.1 and 1.1.2.

Extensional Flow Behavior of Methylcellulose Solutions Containing Fibrils

ACS Macro Letters, 2018
The extensional properties of semidilute aqueous methylcellulose (MC) solutions have been characterized. Pure aqueous MC solutions are shear-thinning liquids at room temperature. With the addition of 8 wt % NaCl, a fraction of MC self-assembles into long fibrils, which modify the rheological properties of the original MC solution.

Casson fluid flow in a microchannel containing a flow disturbing rib

Chemical Engineering Science, 2016
Abstract This work numerically studies the flow of a Casson liquid over a flow-disturbing rib in a rectangular μ -channel. The aim is to investigate, using a previously validated CFD code, the effect of the non-Newtonian behavior on the fluid flow characteristics, i.e.

Flow through unconfined aquifers containing interceptor drains

Journal of Hydrology, 1978
Abstract The flow into interceptor drains, located in an aquifer bounded by water standing at different levels in two parallel vertical ditches which extend in depth to a horizontal floor on which the aquifer rests, and the discharge into the downstream ditch are shown to be related to the water levels in the ditches by a modified form of Dupuit's ...

Simulation of turbulent flows containing strong shocks

Physica Scripta, 2008
Simulation of turbulent flows with strong shocks is a computationally challenging problem. The requirements for a method to produce accurate results for turbulence are orthogonal to those needed to treat shocks properly. In order to prevent an unphysical rate of decay of turbulent structures, it is necessary to use a method with very low numerical ...

Particle Vaporization Velocimetry for soot-containing flows

38th Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2000
. We characterize a novel imaging technique for velocity measurements in particle laden flows. The technique, Particle Vaporization Velocimetry (PVV), is a form of flow tagging based on laser vaporization of absorbing particles at defined locations in the flow. The locations of these tagged regions are then interrogated after a known delay to determine
