The Quest for the Causal Joint [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This study is an examination of three proposals for a \"causal joint\" model of God\'s action in the world. Adapting the thought of Austin Farrer and David Burrell, the author seeks to show how these hypotheses are theologically flawed.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

The Intrinsic Far-infrared Continua of Type-1 Quasars

open access: yes, 2017
The range of currently proposed active galactic nucleus (AGN) far-infrared templates results in uncertainties in retrieving host galaxy information from infrared observations and also undermines constraints on the outer part of the AGN torus.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Mapping Properties of Co-existentially Closed Continua [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
A continuous surjection between compacta is called co-existential if it is the second of two maps whose composition is a standard ultracopower projection.

Aperiodic invariant continua for surface homeomorphisms

open access: yes, 2008
We prove that if a homeomorphism of a closed orientable surface S has no wandering points and leaves invariant a compact, connected set K which contains no periodic points, then either K=S and S is a torus, or $K$ is the intersection of a decreasing ...

On continua comparable with all continua

open access: yesTopology and its Applications, 1999
Continua \(X\) and \(Y\) are said to be comparable provided \(Y\) is a continuous image of \(X\) or \(X\) is a continuous image of \(Y\). Let \(L\) denote a harmonic fan \(H\) with a sequence of smaller and smaller harmonic fans attached to the endpoints of \(H\). The authors prove the following Theorem.
