“It Is Much Safer to Be Sparse than Connected”: Safe Control of Robotic Swarm Density Dynamics with PDE Optimization with State Constraints

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This paper proposes a novel control framework to ensure safety of a robotic swarm. A feedback optimization controller is capable of driving the swarm toward a target density while keeping risk‐zone exposure below a safety threshold. Theory and experiments show how safety is more effectively achieved for sparsely connected swarms.

Performance improvement of discrete‐time linear‐quadratic regulators applied to uncertain linear systems using the Tikhonov regularization method

open access: yesAsian Journal of Control, EarlyView.
Abstract The linear‐quadratic regulator (LQR) problem of optimal control of an uncertain discrete‐time linear system (DTLS) is revisited in this paper from the perspective of Tikhonov regularization. We show that an optimally chosen regularization parameter reduces, compared to the classical LQR, the values of a scalar error function, as well as the ...

Adjoint entropy vs Topological entropy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Recently the adjoint algebraic entropy of endomorphisms of abelian groups was introduced and studied. We generalize the notion of adjoint entropy to continuous endomorphisms of topological abelian groups.

Heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity and porosity fields reconstruction through steady-state flow and transient solute transport data using the continuous adjoint state

open access: yesAdvances in Water Resources, 2019
A parameter estimation methodology has been developed on the basis of model inversion using a Quasi–Newton method and adaptive parameterization. The continuous adjoint state equations for both flow and transport in porous media are employed as the tool ...

Governing Positive Energy Districts: The Role of Legitimation and Identity Across Residential and Industrial Contexts

open access: yesEnvironmental Policy and Governance, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Increasing electricity demand from data centres, industrial applications, electric vehicles and domestic heating is creating pressure to develop electricity systems in many parts of the world, but especially in Western countries. In response to challenges such as grid congestion, interconnection queues and climate‐related hazards, network ...

Adjoint bi-continuous semigroups and semigroups on the space of measures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
summary:For a given bi-continuous semigroup $(T(t))_{t\geq 0}$ on a Banach space $X$ we define its adjoint on an appropriate closed subspace $X^\circ $ of the norm dual $X'$.

The Cut-Cell Method for the Conjugate Heat Transfer Topology Optimization of Turbulent Flows Using the “Think Discrete–Do Continuous” Adjoint

open access: yesEnergies
This paper presents a topology optimization (TopO) method for conjugate heat transfer (CHT), with turbulent flows. Topological changes are controlled by an artificial material distribution field (design variables), defined at the cells of a background ...

Numerical approximation of the spectrum of self-adjoint continuously invertible operators

open access: yesCoRR, 2021
This paper deals with the generalized spectrum of continuously invertible linear operators defined on infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. More precisely, we consider two bounded, coercive, and self-adjoint operators $\bc{A, B}: V\mapsto V^{\#}$, where $V^{\#}$ denotes the dual of $V$, and investigate the conditions under which the whole spectrum of ...

Intraday Functional PCA Forecasting of Cryptocurrency Returns

open access: yesJournal of Forecasting, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We study the functional PCA (FPCA) forecasting method in application to functions of intraday returns on Bitcoin. We show that improved interval forecasts of future return functions are obtained when the conditional heteroscedasticity of return functions is taken into account.

Shape Derivatives of the Eigenvalues of the de Rham Complex for Lipschitz Deformations and Variable Coefficients: Part II

open access: yesMathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this second part of our series of papers, we develop an abstract framework suitable for de Rham complexes that depend on a parameter belonging to an arbitrary Banach space. Our primary focus is on spectral perturbation problems and the differentiability of eigenvalues with respect to perturbations of the involved parameters. As a byproduct,
