Do supersonic aircraft avoid contrails? [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2008
The impact of a potential future fleet of supersonic aircraft on contrail coverage and contrail radiative forcing is investigated by means of simulations with the general circulation model ECHAM4.L39(DLR) including a contrail parameterization.

H-alpha features with hot onsets III. Fibrils in Lyman-alpha and with ALMA

open access: yes, 2016
In H-alpha most of the solar surface is covered by dense canopies of long opaque fibrils, but predictions for quiet-Sun observations with ALMA have ignored this fact.

Global Modeling of the Contrail and Contrail Cirrus Climate Impact [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 2010
Despite considerable technological advances, aviation impacts on global climate are significant and may constitute a future constraint on the continued growth of air travel. The most important but least understood component in aviation climate impact assessments are contrails, which form as line-shaped ice clouds (linear contrails) and transform into ...

Atmospheric Adjustments to In Situ Cirrus Formation in Ice Supersaturated Regions

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract High‐level ice clouds exert a net warming on the climate system because their greenhouse effect outweighs their albedo effect. Focusing on in‐situ cirrus, their formation involves the conversion of upper‐tropospheric water vapor into ice crystals.

Feasibility of contrail avoidance in a commercial flight planning system: an operational analysis

open access: yesEnvironmental Research: Infrastructure and Sustainability
Aircraft condensation trails, also known as contrails, contribute a substantial portion of aviation’s overall climate footprint. Contrail impacts can be reduced through smart flight planning that avoids contrail-forming regions of the atmosphere.

Regional and seasonal impact of hydrogen propulsion systems on potential contrail cirrus cover

open access: yesAtmospheric Environment: X
The decarbonization of air transportation requires novel propulsion concepts in order to replace fossil kerosene powered gas turbines. Within various options, H2 based propulsion is one of the most promising candidates, at least for regional and short ...

Contrail cirrus supporting areas in model and observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Contrails form and persist dependent on the surrounding moisture, temperature and pressure fields and on fuel and aircraft specific variables. After formation, contrail persistence requires only supersaturation relative to ice.

Evolution of the water cluster in pore condensation

open access: yesDroplet, Volume 5, Issue 2, April 2026.
In pore condensation, lower contact angles reduce molecular displacement (60%) and potential energy (10%), enhancing vapor capture tenfold. Pores restrict water molecule mobility, promoting condensation. On hydrophobic surfaces (124∘$^\circ$), pores stabilize embryos, ensuring uniform condensation within pores, boosting nucleation efficiency.

The Future of Hydrogen‐Powered Aviation: Technologies, Challenges, and a Strategic Roadmap for Sustainable Decarbonization

open access: yesAdvanced Energy and Sustainability Research, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2026.
Hydrogen‐powered aviation offers a transformative pathway to zero‐emission flight by eliminating in‐flight CO2 emissions. Key considerations include propulsion systems (fuel cells and hydrogen combustion), cryogenic storage and insulation challenges, infrastructure and cost barriers, and supply‐chain constraints.

Elementary GLOBE: To Spread or Not To Spread [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
A learning activity for the "Do You Know That Clouds Have Names?" book in the Elementary GLOBE series. Students will explore the difference between the three types of contrails, make observations of contrails outside, and record their observations ...
