Laparoscopic evaluation for contralateral patent processus vaginalis: Part II

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1996
Between May 1,1992 and August 1, 1995, 599 consecutively treated children under 10 years of age evaluated by the authors for a known inguinal hernia were involved in a prospective protocol to determine whether diagnostic laparoscopy has a place for evaluation of the contralateral inguinal region.

Incidence of contralateral patent processus vaginalis in children with inguinal hernia

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 2001
The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of contralateral patent processus vaginalis (PPV) in children with inguinal hernia using direct laparoscopic inspection. This study evaluates the incidence and size of contralateral PPVs in 143 children (96 boys, 47 girls) with clinically unilateral indirect inguinal hernia who underwent ...

Selective laparoscopic probing for a contralateral patent processus vaginalis reduces the need for contralateral exploration in inconclusive cases

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 2000
Repair of an indirect inguinal hernia is the most common procedure performed by pediatric surgeons, yet the need for contralateral exploration remains controversial. This prospective study evaluated the use of laparoscopy combined with the selective use of probing to determine the presence or absence of a contralateral patent processus vaginalis (CPPV).

The relationship between contralateral patent processus vaginalis and metachronous contralateral inguinal hernia in children with unilateral inguinal hernia: a prospective observational study

Hernia: the Journal of Hernias and Abdominal Wall Surgery, 2022
Laparoscopic contralateral patent processus vaginalis (CPPV) repair in children is debatable due to the high CPPV rate, but low metachronous contralateral inguinal hernia (MCIH) rate. We conducted this study to find risk factors for MCIH.We conducted a prospective, observational trial with patients recruited from Shanghai Children's Hospital.

Laparoscopic incidence of contralateral patent processus vaginalis in boys with clinical unilateral inguinal hernias

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1994
In 38 boys with clinical unilateral inguinal hernias (CUIH), the contralateral processus vaginalis was examined laparoscopically before surgical manipulation at the time of elective inguinal herniorrhaphy. General anesthesia was used in each case, and a 30 degrees, 2.7-mm laparoscopic was introduced using standard techniques.

Intraoperative laparoscopy in unilateral hernia repair to detect a contralateral patent processus vaginalis

Pediatric Surgery International, 1993
The controversy over the need to explore the asymptomatic contralateral groin for the existence of a hernia sac in children who undergo inguinal hernia repair is not easy to resolve. To detect the patency of the contralateral processus vaginalis, we used intraoperative nonpuncture laparoscopy.

Preoperative sonographic evaluation is a useful method of detecting contralateral patent processus vaginalis in pediatric patients with unilateral inguinal hernia

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 2004
To analyze the value of ultrasound scan (US) in the preoperative identification of a contralateral patent processus vaginalis (CPPV), the authors investigated the presence of CPPV by US in children with clinically diagnosed unilateral inguinal hernias.Three hundred forty-eight patients (168 boys and 180 girls) with unilateral inguinal hernia underwent ...

Incidence of contralateral patent processus vaginalis in relation to age at laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure for pediatric inguinal hernia

Surgery Today, 2015
Laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure (LPEC) allows the surgeon to look for contralateral patent processus vaginalis (CPPV) directly. We investigated the incidence of CPPV in relation to age at LPEC.Following Institutional Review Board approval, 1232 patients ranging in age from 2 months old to 15 years old (median 4.7 years), who underwent

Independent risk factors for contralateral patent processus vaginalis undetected by pre-operative ultrasonography in boys with unilateral inguinal hernia

Pediatric Surgery International, 2019
Many trials have been done to make sure probability of metachronous contralateral side hernia (MCH) and contralateral patent processus vaginalis (CPPV). But the necessity of contralateral side exploration is still on debate. The aim is to investigate the risk factors for the consideration of contralateral examination on operation. The study was designed

Effects of insistent screening for contralateral patent processus vaginalis in laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure to prevent metachronous contralateral onset of pediatric inguinal hernia

Surgery Today, 2015
Laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure (LPEC) is known to reduce the incidence of metachronous contralateral hernia (MCH) compared to conventional hernia repair. We herein describe the effects of insistent screening for an irregular orifice of the contralateral patent processus vaginalis (CPPV).All patients who underwent LPEC between 2003 ...
