Fate of patent processus vaginalis: a case against routine contralateral exploration for unilateral inguinal hernia in children

Pediatric Surgery International, 1993
Unilateral inguinal hernia in a young child poses a management dilemma. Most paediatric surgeons prefer to explore the contralateral side routinely based on the reports showing a high (50%–100%) incidence of patent processus vaginalis (PPV) in young infants, while autopsy studies have shown that in 20%–30% of the population the PPV remains patent.

Construction and validation of a predictive model for the risk of contralateral patent processus vaginalis in children with unilateral inguinal hernia or hydrocele

European Journal of Pediatrics
To develop a nomogram model for predicting contralateral patent processus vaginalis in children with unilateral inguinal hernia or hydrocele. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 259 children with unilateral inguinal hernia or hydrocele who underwent laparoscopic surgery at the Southern Hospital of Southern Medical University from January 2021 to ...

Laparoscopic evaluation for a contralateral patent processus vaginalis

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1994
Between May 1, 1992 and March 1, 1993, 221 consecutively treated children under 10 years of age evaluated by the authors for a known inguinal hernia were involved in a prospective protocol to determine whether diagnostic laparoscopy has a place for evaluation of the contralateral inguinal region.

Laparoscopic evaluation for a contralateral patent processus vaginalis: part III

Urology, 1998
Between May 1, 1992 and August 1, 1996, 759 consecutive children younger than 10 years of age were evaluated and treated for known inguinal hernia. These children were participating in a prospective investigation of the potential role of diagnostic laparoscopy in the evaluation of the contralateral inguinal anatomy.

Incidence of pediatric metachronous contralateral inguinal hernia and the relationship with contralateral patent processus vaginalis

Surgical Endoscopy, 2018
The management of contralateral patent processus vaginalis (CPPV) in children with unilateral inguinal hernia is still controversial. The objective of this study was to verify the relationship between metachronous contralateral inguinal hernia (MCIH) and CPPV, and the risk factors of MCIH.Children with unilateral inguinal hernia from three medical ...

A new technique for laparoscopic exploration to find contralateral patent processus vaginalis

Surgical Endoscopy, 2000
Contralateral inguinal exploration in an infant with a symptomatic unilateral hernia is controversial. A patent processus vaginalis (PPV) may be found in up to 60% of term infants, and even in a greater number of preterm infants. However, only 10% to 30% of children will subsequently develop a contralateral hernia when only the symptomatic side is ...

Contralateral Metachronous Hernia Following Negative Laparoscopic Evaluation for Contralateral Patent Processus Vaginalis: A Meta-analysis

Journal of Laparoendoscopic & Advanced Surgical Techniques, 2014
Abstract Objective: To conduct a meta-analysis of contralateral metachronous inguinal hernia (CMIH) that originated from negative laparoscopic evaluation for contralateral patent processus vaginalis (CPPV) in children who presented with a unilateral inguinal hernia and to determine the ...

LAPAROSCOPIC EVALUATION OF CONTRALATERAL PATENT PROCESSUS VAGINALIS IN GIRLS WITH INGUINAL HERNIAS

Journal of Urology, 2009
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Abdominoscrotal hydroceles (ASH) can present a formidable surgical challenge even to an experienced surgeon. They are extremely difficult to correct due to the complex nature of the hydrocele looping back through the internal ring back into the abdomen. This makes identification of the hernia opening difficult at times.

Diagnostic laparoscopy for contralateral patent processus vaginalis and nonpalpable testes

Seminars in Pediatric Surgery, 1998
Diagnostic laparoscopy can be a valuable adjunct for the surgical approach to surgical conditions in children. Two frequently employed indications for diagnostic laparoscopy in children include (1) the search for a contralateral patent processus vaginalis in a child with a known inguinal hernia and (2) localization and management in boys with a ...
