Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

P1-4: Neural Correlates of Fading Illusion Revealed in Responses of V1 Neurons

open access: yesi-Perception, 2012
Visual stimuli without sharp edges fade gradually under visual fixation. This phenomenon is known as Troxler fading or fading illusion. Traditionally, this fading is explained by a hypothesis that physical stimulus is cancelled by a negative image ...

Human non-contrast T1 values and correlation with histology in diffuse fibrosis

open access: yesHeart, 2013
Background Aortic stenosis (AS) leads to diffuse fibrosis in the myocardium, which is linked to adverse outcome. Myocardial T1 values change with tissue composition.

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.

Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

Face Attractiveness versus Artistic Beauty in Art Portraits: A Behavioral Study

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2017
From art portraits, the observer may derive at least two different hedonic values: The attractiveness of the depicted person and the artistic beauty of the image that relates to the way of presentation.

Subprime Crisis and Instability of Global Financial Markets [PDF]

open access: yes
In order to prescribe adequate remedies to treat the current financial crisis one has to understand what in the first place went wrong. An age ago, older generations wrote that disease could not be cured without an accurate diagnosis.

Cytoplasmic p21 promotes stemness of colon cancer cells via activation of the NFκB pathway

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytoplasmic p21 promotes colorectal cancer stem cell (CSC) features by destabilizing the NFκB–IκB complex, activating NFκB signaling, and upregulating BCL‐xL and COX2. In contrast to nuclear p21, cytoplasmic p21 enhances spheroid formation and stemness transcription factor CD133.

School size, student achievement, and the "power rating" of poverty: Substantive finding or statistical artifact?

open access: yesEducation Policy Analysis Archives, 2006
The proportion of variance in student achievement that is explained by student SES-"poverty's power rating," as some call it-tends to be lower among smaller schools than among larger schools.

A Contrast/Filling-In Model of 3-D Lightness Perception [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
Wallach's ratio hypothesis states that local luminance ratios clr!termine lightness perception under variable illumination. While local luminance ratios successfully discount gradual variations in illumination (illumination constancy or Type I constancy),
