The impact of internal control systems on sustainable firm performance: the moderating role of the audit committee in Fiji’s listed companies

open access: yesCogent Business & Management
The purpose of this research is guided by stakeholder theory to investigate the impact of internal control on sustainable firm performance and how audit committees (AC) play a role in moderating this relationship.

Sludge-based biochar adsorbent: pore tuning mechanisms, challenges, and role in carbon sequestration

open access: yesBiochar, 2023
Sludge biochar, a carbonized product of raw sludge, contains porous architectures that can act as epicenters for adsorbing external molecules through physical or chemical bonding.

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Avoidance of Phycomyces in a controlled environment

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 1987
The sporangiophore of the fungus Phycomyces bends away from nearby objects without ever touching them. It has been thought that these objects act as aerodynamic obstacles that damp random winds, thereby generating asymmetric distributions of a growth-promoting gas emitted by the growth zone.

Controllability in Partial and Uncertain Environments [PDF]

open access: yes2014 14th International Conference on Application of Concurrency to System Design, 2014
Controller synthesis is a well studied problem that attempts to automatically generate an operational behaviour model of the system-to-be that satisfies a given goal when deployed in a given domain model that behaves according to specified assumptions.

Is the Control Environment a Basis for Customised Risk Management Initiatives in South African Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises?

open access: yesExpert Journal of Business and Management, 2016
Before the official recognition of Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) in South Africa during the mid-1990s, these business entities have been key players in the stimulation of the national economy.

Higher off-target amplicon detection rate in MiSeq v3 compared to v2 reagent kits in the context of 16S-rRNA-sequencing

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
One of the most widely used techniques in microbiota research is 16S-rRNA-sequencing. Several laboratory processes have been shown to impact sequencing results, especially in low biomass samples. Low biomass samples are prone to off-target amplification,

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Associations and recovery dynamics of the nasopharyngeal microbiota during influenza-like illness in the aging population

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Influenza-like illness (ILI), a disease caused by respiratory pathogens including influenza virus, is a major health concern in older adults. There is little information on changes and recovery dynamics of the nasopharyngeal (NP) microbiota of older ...

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative
