Evaluating Ultrafine Particles and PM2.5 in Microenvironments with Health Perspectives: Variability in Concentrations and Pollutant Interrelationships

open access: yesAerosol and Air Quality Research, 2023
Regulation has been applied to the fine particles (PM2.5) but not to particle number concentrations (PNC). We use a mobile platform to measure PNC and PM2.5 in four microenvironments (diesel plume, urban freeway, urban street, and rural freeway). A total

Ground-state Stabilization of Open Quantum Systems by Dissipation

open access: yes, 2015
Control by dissipation, or environment engineering, constitutes an important methodology within quantum coherent control which was proposed to improve the robustness and scalability of quantum control systems.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

CLIC: Curriculum Learning and Imitation for object Control in non-rewarding environments

open access: yes, 2019
In this paper we study a new reinforcement learning setting where the environment is non-rewarding, contains several possibly related objects of various controllability, and where an apt agent Bob acts independently, with non-observable intentions.

SMC framework in motion control systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Design of a motion control system should take into account both the unconstrained motion performed without interaction with environment or other system, and the constrained motion where system is in contact with environment or has certain functional ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Active vibration control in microgravity environment [PDF]

open access: yes
The low gravity environment of the space station is suitable for experiments or manufacturing processes which require near zero gravity. An experiment was fabricated to test the validity of the active control process and to verify the flow and control ...

Plant Productivity in Controlled Environments

open access: yesHortScience, 1988
Abstract To assess the cost and area/volume requirements of a farm in a space station or Lunar or Martian base, a few laboratories in the United States, the Soviet Union, France, and Japan are studying optimum controlled environments for the production of selected crops.
