Phosphate limitation to control biofouling
Water Research, 2010Phosphate limitation as a method to control biofouling of spiral wound reverse osmosis (RO) membranes was studied at a full-scale installation fed with extensively pretreated water. The RO installation is characterized by (i) a low feed channel pressure drop increase and (ii) low biomass concentrations in membrane elements at the installation feed side.

Paradox of simple limiter control
Physical Review E, 2006Chaos control by simple limiters is an easy-to-implement and effective method of stabilizing irregular fluctuations. Here we show that applying limiter control to a state variable can significantly shift its mean value. In many situations, this is a countereffective as well as unexpected result, when the aim of control is also to restrict the dynamics.

Some Limitations of Rheostatic Control
Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1911We may consider the limits of rheostatic control under three classes, functional, where the limitations are inherent to the type of control; resistance material, where the limitations are due to physical characteristics of the rheostat material, and switching devices where the limitations apply to the method of adjusting resistance.

Performance limitations in decentralized control
Journal of Process Control, 2000Abstract In decentralized control of multivariable systems, the system is decomposed into a number of subsystems and individual controllers are designed for each subsystem. Advantages of such decomposition include reduced modelling requirements and ease of implementation.

Migration: The limits of governmental control
Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, 1996"The first issue addressed in the present article is why it is so difficult for governments to intervene successfully in migration processes. Within the analytical framework of the article, the point is made that the variables addressed by governmental measures form only a small part of the relevant variables.

The Limits of Compulsion in Controlling AIDS
The Hastings Center Report, 1986AIDS poses an unparalleled challenge for health policy makers seeking methods to reduce its spread and to help ensure public safety consistent with the protection of individual rights. Pressure is mounting on public health officials to consider compulsory infection control strategies. Programs of contact notification can occur on 2 levels: voluntary

Limits of control flow on parallelism
ACM SIGARCH Computer Architecture News, 1992This paper discusses three techniques useful in relaxing the constraints imposed by control flow on parallelism: control dependence analysis, executing multiple flows of control simultaneously, and speculative execution. We evaluate these techniques by using trace simulations to find the limits of parallelism for machines that employ different ...

Controlling Chaos with Simple Limiters
Physical Review Letters, 2000New experimental results demonstrate that chaos control can be accomplished using controllers that are very simple relative to the system being controlled. Chaotic dynamics in a driven pendulum and a double scroll circuit are controlled using an adjustable, passive limiter-a weight for the pendulum and a diode for the circuit.

The Diffusion-Control Limit Revisited
Physical Review Letters, 2002We consider nonequilibrium adsorption to a freshly formed surface. Owing to the initial lack of equilibrium, the common diffusion-control assumption is inconsistent at small times. A uniform small-time asymptotic approximation is constructed for a Langmuir-type system in terms of the small parameter epsilon representing the ratio of the respective ...
