Mechanisms of size control

Current Opinion in Genetics & Development, 2001
The study of organ size control is a discipline of developmental biology that is largely unexplored. Although the size of an organ or organism depends largely on cell numbers and cell size, studies have found that the simple deregulation of cell proliferation or cell growth does not necessarily lead to changes in organ size.

Control by cholinergic mechanisms

European Journal of Pharmacology, 2006
In the respiratory tract acetylcholine is neurotransmitter in ganglia and postganglionic parasympathetic nerves, but in addition is paracrine mediator released from various non-neuronal cells. Almost every cell type present in the respiratory tract expresses nicotinic and muscarinic receptors and therefore appears to be a target for acetylcholine.

Chalone control mechanisms

Life Sciences, 1975
Abstract Mitotic control in adult mammalian tissues depends on tissue-specific mitotic inhibitors, the chalones, and on a non-specific mitotic promotor, the mesenchymal factor. The epidermal chalone mechanism is examined, as representative of tissue mechanisms in general, in relation to the control of tissue mass. The breakdown of this control system

Control mechanisms in cancer

European Journal of Cancer (1965), 1970
Abstract Control mechanisms for cell movement and replication which have been detected in tissue culture and which seem to depend on mutual contact of the cells are discussed. Contact inhibition of movement amongst fibroblasts seems to depend on a contractile response that inhibits locomotion; but some inhibitions may depend on inadequate adhesion ...

Instability Mechanisms in Cooperative Control

IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 2008
We consider a motion coordination problem with second order agent dynamics and examine the closed-loop robustness with respect to switching topology, variation of link gain, and unmodeled dynamics. In each case, we illustrate with examples possible instability mechanisms and discuss under what conditions stability is maintained.

The mechanism and control of cytokinesis

Current Opinion in Cell Biology, 1997
Cytokinesis is under active investigation in each of the dominant experimental model systems. During 1996 and 1997, several developments necessitated the reassessment of the prevailing model for cytokinesis. In addition, the inventory of proteins required for cytokinesis has grown considerably.

Mechanisms of Sleep Control

Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology, 1990
Neurons in the dorsolateral pontine reticular formation, in interaction with other brainstem and forebrain regions, generate the basic phenomena of rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. Non-REM sleep is the product of multiple control mechanisms in the forebrain and brainstem.

Mechanisms and control of repolarization

European Heart Journal, 1993
This paper describes and discusses interventions that may lead to prolongation of the action potential. Special emphasis is given to regulation by drugs. The results of studies focusing on the modulation of inward and outward currents are presented in detail. Specific attention is given to Na+, Ca2+, K+ and Cl- channel currents and their components.

Thermogenic Mechanisms and their Control

1978
The alterations in properties of mitochondria and of plasma membrane of brown adipose tissue and skeletal muscle of cold-acclimated rats are reviewed in order to bring out any adaptive changes which are related to the mechanism of nonshivering thermogenesis, and thus to the enhanced calorigenic action of catecholamines known to exist in these animals ...

Adaptive control of mechanical manipulators

Proceedings. 1986 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 1986
When an accurate dynamic model of a mechanical manipu lator is available, it may be used in a nonlinear, model-based scheme to control the manipulator. Such a control formula tion yields a controller that suppresses disturbances and tracks desired trajectories uniformly in all configurations of the manipulator.
