Optimal Control of Sediment in Irrigation Canals
2018 23rd International Conference on Methods & Models in Automation & Robotics (MMAR), 2018In this work a 2D mathematical model for simulating the sedimentation of suspended particles in canals is proposed. This model is obtained by coupling the shallow water equations for hydrodynamics with the Exner equations for sediment transport. Looking to avoid the suspended particles settling and their unwanted effects, the model is used to formulate

Optimum control of irrigation water application
Automatica, 1974The problem of controlling soil water within the root zone of irrigated crops to minimize the expected loss is examined. Control is accomplished by scheduling the amount of and timing irrigations to replenish the soil water reservoir depleted by the crop's water consumption.

Advanced control strategies for irrigation systems
2017 9th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Data Acquisition and Advanced Computing Systems: Technology and Applications (IDAACS), 2017Water management and irrigation scheduling have become the main subjects of different studies in the last decades, due to their high influence on crop performance indicators. This study presents the most important parameters that have to be monitored in an irrigation management system and the most important ones are synthesized: air moisture and ...

Climate and Irrigation Control
2014This chapter describes the climate and irrigation control problem inside a greenhouse and several control techniques widely used for such purposes, including illustrative results. As greenhouse crop production is influenced by inside climate, control strategies are important to maintain adequate conditions in spite of disturbances acting on the system.

Distributed independent actuation for irrigation control
Proceedings of the 1st ACM Conference on Embedded Systems for Energy-Efficient Buildings, 2014In this work, we propose that irrigation systems with distributed independent actuation can substantially reduce water consumption in lawn irrigation. To test this theory, we develop a computationally light fluid flow model that allows the optimization of valve scheduling using standard optimization techniques.

Plug-and-Play Irrigation Control at Scale
2018 17th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks (IPSN), 2018Lawns, also known as turf, cover an estimated 128,000km2 [9] in North America alone, with landscape requirements representing 30% of freshwater consumed in the residential domain [27]. With this consumption comes a large amount of environmental, economic, and social incentive to make turf irrigation systems as efficient as possible.

Irrigation planning: An optimal control approach
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2013We aim to plan the water usage in the irrigation of a given farmland keeping, at same time, the field cultivation in a good state of preservation. This problem is modeled and tackled as an optimal control problem: minimize the water flow (control) so that the extent water amount in the soil (trajectory) fulfills the cultivation water requirements.
