Convection and Convective‐Organization in Hothouse Climates

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2023
AbstractIn a “hothouse” climate, warm temperatures lead to a high tropospheric water vapor concentration. Sufficiently high water vapor levels lead to the closing of the water vapor infrared window, which prevents radiative cooling of the lower troposphere.

Theories of convection and the spectrum of turbulence in the solar photosphere [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Classical theories of turbulence do not describe accurately inertial range scaling laws in turbulent convection and notably fail to model the shape of the turbulent spectrum of solar photospheric convection.

Multiple‐Instance Superparameterization: 1. Concept, and Predictability of Precipitation

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2019
We have investigated the predictability of precipitation using a new configuration of the superparameterized Community Atmosphere Model (SP‐CAM). The new configuration, called the multiple‐instance SP‐CAM, or MP‐CAM, uses the average heating and drying ...

Mathematical Modelling of Hydromagnetic Convection from a Rotating Sphere with Impulsive Motion and Buoyancy Effects

open access: yesNonlinear Analysis, 2006
The convective heat transfer on a rotating sphere in the presence of magnetic field, buoyancy forces and impulsive motion is examined theoretically and numerically in this paper.

Multiple‐Instance Superparameterization: 2. The Effects of Stochastic Convection on the Simulated Climate

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2019
The cloud‐permitting model (CPM) of the superparameterized Community Atmosphere Model (SP‐CAM) is a stochastic parameterization. As reported in a companion paper, we have created a variant of SP‐CAM, called MP‐CAM, that uses the averaged feedback of 10 ...

Granular Convection in Microgravity [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2013
We investigate the role of gravity on convection in a dense granular shear flow. Using a microgravity modified Taylor-Couette shear cell under the conditions of parabolic flight microgravity, we demonstrate experimentally that secondary, convective-like flows in a sheared granular material are close to zero in microgravity and enhanced under high ...

Tongan Volcanic Eruption Intensifies Tropical Cyclone Cody (2022)

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
The aerosol−cloud impacts of the Tongan volcanic eruptions on the nearby tropical cyclone (TC) Cody on January 14∼15, 2022 are investigated by the MODIS satellite and ERA5 reanalysis data.

Formation of Large-Scale Semi-Organized Structures in Turbulent Convection [PDF]

open access: yesPhys.Rev. E66 (2002) 066305, 2002
A new mean-field theory of turbulent convection is developed. This theory predicts the convective wind instability in a shear-free turbulent convection which causes formation of large-scale semi-organized fluid motions in the form of cells or rolls. Spatial characteristics of these motions, such as the minimum size of the growing perturbations and the ...

The Potential for Discriminating Microphysical Processes in Numerical Weather Forecasts Using Airborne Polarimetric Radio Occultations

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2019
Accurate representation of cloud microphysical processes in numerical weather and climate models has proven challenging, in part because of the highly specialized instrumentation required for diagnosing errors in simulated distributions of hydrometeors ...

Significant Amplification of Instantaneous Extreme Precipitation With Convective Self‐Aggregation

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2021
This work explores the effect of convective self‐aggregation on extreme rainfall intensities through an analysis at several stages of the cloud lifecycle.
