Transition to finger convection in double-diffusive convection [PDF]
Finger convection is observed experimentally in an electrodeposition cell in which a destabilizing gradient of copper ions is maintained against a stabilizing temperature gradient. This double-diffusive system shows finger convection even if the total density stratification is unstable.

Convection and Convective‐Organization in Hothouse Climates
AbstractIn a “hothouse” climate, warm temperatures lead to a high tropospheric water vapor concentration. Sufficiently high water vapor levels lead to the closing of the water vapor infrared window, which prevents radiative cooling of the lower troposphere.

Granular Convection in Microgravity [PDF]
We investigate the role of gravity on convection in a dense granular shear flow. Using a microgravity modified Taylor-Couette shear cell under the conditions of parabolic flight microgravity, we demonstrate experimentally that secondary, convective-like flows in a sheared granular material are close to zero in microgravity and enhanced under high ...

DETERMINING THE PERFORMANCE OF A HEAT EXCHANGER USED IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY [PDF]
The study of heat transfer in the food industry is as important as in any other industry. Food products are constantly subjected to heat treatments. For this reason, a sunflower food oil, which undergoes heat treatment in the manufacturing process, was ...

Could Machine Learning Break the Convection Parameterization Deadlock?
Representing unresolved moist convection in coarse‐scale climate models remains one of the main bottlenecks of current climate simulations. Many of the biases present with parameterized convection are strongly reduced when convection is explicitly ...

Unstable Convection in a Vertical Double–Layer Porous Slab
A convective stability analysis of the flow in a vertical fluid-saturated porous slab made of two layers with different thermophysical properties is presented. The external boundaries are isothermal with one of them impermeable while the other is open to

Reynolds stress models of convection in convective cores [PDF]
AbstractWe investigate the properties of non-local Reynolds stress models of turbulent convection in a spherical geometry. Regularity at the centre r=0 places constraints on the behaviour of 3rd order moments. Some of the down-gradient and algebraic closure models have inconsistent behaviour at r=0. A combination of down-gradient and algebraic closures

Sensitivity of Summertime Convection to Aerosol Loading and Properties in the United Arab Emirates
The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is used to investigate convection–aerosol interactions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for a summertime convective event. Both an idealized and climatological aerosol distributions are considered.

Enhanced future changes in wet and dry extremes over Africa at convection-permitting scale
African society is particularly vulnerable to climate change. The representation of convection in climate models has so far restricted our ability to accurately simulate African weather extremes, limiting climate change predictions.
