On convergence of configurations

open access: yesDiscrete Mathematics, 1978
AbstractThe transition rule F of a cellular automaton may sometimes be regarded as a “rule of growth” of a crystal from a “seed” ω. A study is made of the iterates ω, Fω, F2ω,…. For certain growth rules F it is proved that when ω is “sufficiently large” the sequence Fpω “converges” to a rational polytope W. The limiting shape W depends only on F.

First‐Principles Modeling of Solid Solution Softening and Hardening Effects in Al–Mg–Zr–Si Aluminum Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The role of various alloying elements in face‐centered cubic aluminum on the barrier of a Shockley partial dislocation during its motion is presented. The study aims to understand how alloying atoms such as Mg, Si, and Zr affect the energy landscape for dislocation motion, thus influencing the solid solution hardening and softening in aluminum, which ...

Convergence in the Geosciences

open access: yesGeoHealth, 2017
AbstractThe 21st century presents unprecedented challenges if society is to continue to provide abundant energy, water, and food, and high quality housing and medical care to a growing global population. Deforestation and aquifer depletion are at unsustainable rates, and use of fossil fuels is leading to unprecedented climate change.
