Phase separation phenomena in solutions of cellulose acetate. I. Differential scanning calorimetry of cellulose acetate in mixtures of dioxane and water [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
The nature and kinetics of phase separation processes of solutions of cellulose acetate (degree of substitution, 2.5) in mixtures of dioxane and water are studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Climate Change Effects on Heating and Cooling Demands of Buildings in Canada

open access: yesCivilEng, 2022
Climate change is causing more frequent extreme weather events. The consequences of increasing global temperature on the operating cost of existing buildings, and the associated health, safety, and economic risks were investigated.

Combined effects on residual strength of a high performance concrete exposed to fire [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Concrete structures exposed to fire suffer from damage, but can remain a certain degree of residual strength. International research has shown that the compressive strength of concrete decreases not only with temperature, but also by the way of cooling ...

Cool Roof Impact on Building Energy Need: The Role of Thermal Insulation with Varying Climate Conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Cool roof effectiveness in improving building thermal-energy performance is affected by different variables. In particular, roof insulation level and climate conditions are key parameters influencing cool roofs benefits and whole building energy ...

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Lake Superior's summer cooling of shorelines and adjacent inland forests: Implications for refugia of boreal forests and disjunct arctic–alpine plants

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2023
Climate refugia can serve as remnant habitat for cold‐adapted species and delay forest transitions. The world's largest freshwater lake by surface area, Lake Superior, serves as a model system for understanding cooling‐mediated refugia effects, as its ...

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

KDM7A and KDM1A inhibition suppresses tumour promoting pathways in prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Treatment resistance is a major challenge for patients with advanced prostate cancer. This study examined an alternative approach to target the major prostate cancer‐promoting pathway by targeting epigenetic factors, whose levels are higher in tumours.
