Offspring performance does not explain oviposition preference in the leafminer Stigmella sorbi (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae): a tri‐trophic perspective

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
We studied oviposition site selection in a leaf‐mining moth (Stigmella sorbi) on rowan trees (Sorbus aucuparia) in northwestern Russia, assessing larval performance across different shoot types, leaf positions, and leaflets. Larval survival was highest on long vegetative shoots, yet females showed no preference for these optimal sites.

Core-shell microdisk with InGaN/GaN quantum wells for dual-band whispering gallery mode lasing

open access: yesChip
The development of high-quality, stable, and cost-effective micro/nano dual-band lasing remains a crucial challenge for multifunctional applications. In this study, we demonstrated high-Q dual-band whispering gallery mode lasing in an independent core ...

Behavioral, Ecological, and Morphological Data Suggest a Close Relationship Between the Ant Colobopsis truncata and the Gall Wasp Aphelonyx cerricola

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Aphelonyx cerricola and the different stages that make this gall colonizable by ants. ABSTRACT Wasps of the family Cynipidae are known to induce galls of a species‐specific morphology, which during senescence provide a refuge for secondary insect fauna, especially ants.

Temperature interacts with jack pine host defences to influence the growth of mountain pine beetle‐associated fungi

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
Optimal growing temperatures varied with mountain pine beetle‐associated fungal species. There was only a marginal impact of temperature on the response of fungi to defensive monoterpenes of novel host pine. Interspecific facilitation occurred for Leptiographuim longiclavatum when grown in Ophiostoma montium‐induced treatments at optimal temperatures ...

Host desiccation and interspecific competition limit reproductive performance of a bark beetle

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
At high and moderate phloem moisture levels, Polygraphus proximus reproductive success was suppressed by sympatric species density. At low phloem moisture, P. proximus reproductive success was suppressed by the low phloem moisture regardless of the Cryphalus laricis hole density. Conspecific density (i.e., attack density of P.

Spectacle and Spy Stories: The 1954 Royal Commission on Espionage

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Politics &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Menzies government's 1954 royal commission, established to investigate Soviet espionage in Australia, is well known as the backdrop to the Labor Party split. It saw opposition leader H.V. Evatt's demise and ushered in an almost 20‐year period of Liberal Party governance.

The Great Ice-Cream Robbery. Tate Gallery, London, 1970

open access: yes, 1971
Black. Sounds of traffic. Black. Men’s voices discussing how to arrange parts of installation. "…put the bloody one in front." "That’s not how it is here. There’s one where you see the middle bone. That one’s light, the other one’s a darker colour…"

More Inspired, Less Anxious: Well‐Being Impacts of a Self‐Directed Art Museum Visit

open access: yesCurator: The Museum Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Increasingly, art museums are seen as places that can support human flourishing. We describe a quasi‐experimental investigation of the impacts of a self‐directed art museum visit on adults' subjective well‐being. Data were collected from 363 adults at three art museums in Seattle, WA.
