Boosting Evaporative Cooling Performance with Microporous Aerogel

open access: yesMicromachines, 2023
Hydrogel-based evaporative cooling with a low carbon footprint is regarded as a promising technology for thermal regulation. Yet, the efficiency of hydrogel regeneration at night generally mismatches with vapor evaporation during the day, resulting in a ...

Effect of Airflow Velocity on Pre-cooling Process of Pomegranate by Forced Cooling Air under Unsteady State Heat Transfer Condition [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Machinery, 2018
Introduction Pomegranate (Punica grantum L.) is classified into the family of Punicaceae. One of the most influential factors in postharvest life and quality of horticultural products is temperature.

Cooling by Time Reversal of Atomic Matter Waves [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2008
We propose an experimental scheme which allows us to realized approximate time reversal of matter waves for ultracold atoms in the regime of quantum chaos. We show that a significant fraction of the atoms return back to their original state, being at the same time cooled down by several orders of magnitude.

Experimental and Theoretical Study of Vacuum Cooling System [PDF]

open access: yesEngineering and Technology Journal, 2013
A vacuum cooling system and the parameters which affect on its performance were studied experimentally and theoretically. For the experimental study the rig was built up to studying the performance of cooling system in three cases.

Systematic study of tunable laser cooling for trapped-ion experiments

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2023
We report on a comparative analysis of quenched sideband cooling in trapped ions. We introduce a theoretical approach for time-efficient simulation of the temporal cooling characteristics and derive the optimal conditions providing fast laser cooling ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

It Takes Time to Be Cool: On the Relationship between Hyperthermia and Body Cooling in a Migrating Seaduck [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2017
The large amount of energy expended during flapping flight is associated with heat generated through the increased work of the flight muscles. This increased muscle work rate can manifest itself in core body temperature (Tb) increase of 1-2°C in birds during flight. Therefore, episodic body cooling may be mandatory in migratory birds.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...
