Coordination chemistry of metals in medicine: Target sites for bismuth [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Bismuth compounds are used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders and may also be useful for the treatment of other diseases. Bi(III) exhibits a highly variable coordination number (3-10) and often an irregular coordination geometry.

Tetrachloromethane as an editable all-carbon quaternary source

open access: yesNature Communications
Despite the widespread presence of all-carbon quaternary centers in natural products and bioactive compounds, a concise construction strategy remains very challenging.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Coordination chemistry and metal-involving reactions of amidoximes: relevance to the chemistry of oximes and oxime ligands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Although the versatile chemistry of conventional oximes has been extensively reviewed over the years in both the organic chemistry literature and the coordination chemistry literature, amidoximes, RC(NH2)=NOH, have so far received substantially less ...

Cascade alkylarylation of substituted N-allylbenzamides for the construction of dihydroisoquinolin-1(2H)-ones and isoquinoline-1,3(2H,4H)-diones

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2016
An oxidative reaction for the synthesis of 4-alkyl-substituted dihydroisoquinolin-1(2H)-ones with N-allylbenzamide derivatives as starting materials has been developed.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Main-group compounds selectively activate natural gas alkanes under room temperature and atmospheric pressure

open access: yesNature Communications
Most C–H bond activations of natural gas alkanes rely on transition metal complexes. Activations by using main-group systems have been reported but required heating or photo-irradiation under high atmospheric pressure with rather low regioselectivity ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Enzymatic biosynthesis and immobilization of polyprotein verified at the single-molecule level

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Existing methods for protein polymer engineering suffer from low efficiency especially for synthesis large size polyproteins. Here, Deng et al. construct homo-polymer and co-polymer up to decamer by stepwise ligation and cleavage validated by atomic ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
