Integrating Coral Reef and Reef Fish Community Data to Support Sustainable Ecotourism Management in Lihaga Island, North Sulawesi, Indonesia [PDF]

open access: yesBIO Web of Conferences
Coral reef ecosystems and reef-fish communities underpin essential ecosystem services in tropical seas, particularly for small-island ecotourism. Lihaga Island in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, is experiencing increasing ecological pressure as marine ...

Hox Gene Variation Drives Morphological Specialization of Humpback Grouper Cromileptes altivelis

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Cromileptes altivelis exhibits a distinctive “sunken head and humpback” morphology, formed through cranial remodeling. Genetic analyses identified unique amino acid variants in Hoxa7a and Hoxa10b, with functional tests confirming their role in enhancing osteoblast activity and driving cranial remodeling.

Transcriptomics Unveil Dsx1 as a Critical Regulator in Sexual Dimorphism of Crustaceans

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Sexually dimorphic traits are involved in reproductive competition and are shaped by sex‐biased gene expression. This study identifies Dsx1 as a key male‐biased gene in Morinoia aosen and demonstrates through RNA interference that its disruption feminizes male‐specific T3 leg structures.

Creation of complex reef structures through coral restoration does not affect associated fish populations on a remote, well-protected, Caribbean reef [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ
Coral reef ecosystems are facing severe degradation due to anthropogenic activities at both local and global scales. In response, extensive restoration efforts are underway, aiming to bolster coral cover and enhance reef fish communities to foster ...

Goby gummies: A customizable and edible assay to quantify predation in aquatic ecosystems

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Predation is a critical ecosystem process that shapes the structure and functioning of biological communities. However, due to its intermittent nature, fast pace and general unpredictability, predation is difficult to observe and quantify. Therefore, we commonly rely on indirect metrics or proxies of predation, which reflect the outcome of ...

Differential Occupation of Available Coral Hosts by Coral-Dwelling Damselfish (Pomacentridae) on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef

open access: yesDiversity, 2019
Associations between habitat-forming, branching scleractinian corals and damselfish have critical implications for the function and trophic dynamics of coral reef ecosystems.

The productivity of coral reef fishes

open access: yes, 2020
Renato Morais developed a method to quantify the productivity of coral reef fishes. He used this method to evaluate the effects of fishing and climate change on the amount of fish that coral reefs produce. This method can be used to improve assessments of critically important, but increasingly threatened, tropical fisheries that sustain millions of ...

Inferring alternative ecosystem states with field survey data

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Many ecosystems potentially exhibit alternative stable states, where distinct states can coexist under identical environmental conditions. While simulation models have generated key hypotheses in alternative stable states theory, they often rely on scale‐free parameters disconnected from real ecosystems.
