Some new palynomorphs from the Silurian of the Quetame Massif, Cordillera Oriental, Colombia, South America

open access: yesBoletín Geológico, 1994
During a palynological investigation of Paleozoic series in the Colombian Cordillera Oriental Silurian-indicating fossils were found in Colombia. In this paper we describe four palynomorphs which were significant for the Silurian of the Quetame Massif.

Strong Variation in Land‐Use Change Impacts on Tropical Avian Phylogenetic Diversity Between Ecoregions Highlights the Need to Sample Large Spatial Scales

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 1, January 2026.
Forest conversion for agriculture is a major cause of biodiversity loss in the tropics, but its impacts depend on how broadly they are measured. Using data from across Colombia, one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, we examined how deforestation for cattle farming affects the evolutionary history of bird species.

Pleistocene mafic volcanoes in the Puna–Cordillera Oriental boundary, NW-Argentina

open access: yesJournal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 2006
Abstract Los Gemelos and El Saladillo are both monogenetic, strombolian, basaltic–shoshonitic volcanoes that constitute the easternmost recognized examples of mafic Plio-Quaternary volcanism in the southern Central Andes. Two regional faults delimit the borders of the Calchaqui valley, as thrusts with opposite vergence: the eastern Calchaqui fault ...

Fine‐Scale Bioregionalization in a Complex Island System: A Freshwater Perspective From the Greater Antilles

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 53, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim The isolated nature of islands makes them particularly vulnerable to climate change. The freshwater fishes of the Greater Antilles remain understudied and are further threatened by habitat fragmentation and the introduction of exotic invasive species.

The role of inversion tectonics in the structure of the Cordillera Oriental (NW Argentinean Andes)

open access: yesJournal of Structural Geology, 2006
The Salta Basin of Cretaceous age in the Andes of NW Argentina was inverted during the development of the Cordillera Oriental between the Neogene and Recent. The different orientations of the extensional faults of the Salta Rift System and the subsequent W-E shortening resulted in a great variety of inversion structures.

New Insights into the Early Diversification of the Ostracoda: Tremadocian Ostracods from the Cordillera Oriental, Argentina [PDF]

open access: yesActa Palaeontologica Polonica, 2012
New species of ostracods from the Tremadocian in the northwest region of Argentina are described. These are among the earliest well-documented records of ostracods, which shed new light onto the early diversification of the group. The described fauna consists of seven species, five of which are new: Saltite uchuy sp. nov., Saltite kuraq sp.

Quantifying the success of prey crypsis, aposematism, and evasiveness in avoiding predator attack

open access: yesEcology, Volume 106, Issue 11, November 2025.
Abstract Antipredator defenses typically act at distinct stages of the predation sequence—encounter, identification, approach, and subjugation. However, their effectiveness has rarely been quantified and compared simultaneously in wild predator–prey systems.
