Corneal alterations associated with pseudoexfoliation syndrome and glaucoma: A literature review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
A systematic literature review was performed evaluating articles examining the effects of pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) and glaucoma (PEXG) on the cornea with a focus on the corneal endothelium.

Bioengineered corneal tissue for minimally invasive vision restoration in advanced keratoconus in two clinical cohorts

open access: yesNature Biotechnology, 2022
Visual impairment from corneal stromal disease affects millions worldwide. We describe a cell-free engineered corneal tissue, bioengineered porcine construct, double crosslinked (BPCDX) and a minimally invasive surgical method for its implantation.

The elusive scleral cartilages: Comparative anatomy and development in teleosts and avians

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract The sclera of all vertebrate eyes is comprised of connective tissue, with some organisms developing cartilage within this tissue. A review of the cartilages that have been described in the vertebrate sclera and their anatomical relationships is discussed together with their potential homology.

A discrete-to-continuum model for the human cornea with application to keratoconus [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
We introduce a discrete mathematical model for the mechanical behaviour of a planar slice of human corneal tissue, in equilibrium under the action of physiological intraocular pressure (IOP). The model considers a regular (two-dimensional) network of structural elements mimicking a discrete number of parallel collagen lamellae connected by proteoglycan-

Keratoprostheses for corneal blindness: a review of contemporary devices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
According to the World Health Organization, globally 4.9 million are blind due to corneal pathology. Corneal transplantation is successful and curative of the blindness for a majority of these cases. However, it is less successful in a number of diseases

Cataract surgery in patients with corneal disease

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Ophthalmology, 2013
Purpose of review Preexisting corneal disease can be exacerbated by cataract surgery and may prevent well tolerated cataract extraction. This article reviews the current literature and describes how corneal epithelial, stromal and endothelial disease may

Imaging of the calcium activated potassium channel 3.1 (KCa3.1) in vivo using a senicapoc‐derived positron emission tomography tracer

open access: yesArchiv der Pharmazie, Volume 355, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
The 18F‐labeled derivative [18F]3 of senicapoc was synthesized using the prosthetic group approach with 1‐azido‐2‐[18F]fluoroethane ([18F]6) in a “click” reaction. The biological activity of the new positron emission tomography tracer was evaluated in vitro and in vivo.

Identification of histological threshold concepts in health sciences curricula: Students' perception

open access: yesAnatomical Sciences Education, Volume 16, Issue 1, Page 171-182, January/February 2023., 2023
Abstract Students' metacognitive skills and perceptions are considered important variables for high‐quality learning. In this study, students' perceptions were used to identify histological threshold concepts (integrative, irreversible, transformative, and troublesome) in three health sciences curricula.

Keratoconus Classifier for Smartphone-based Corneal Topographer [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Keratoconus is a severe eye disease that leads to deformation of the cornea. It impacts people aged 10-25 years and is the leading cause of blindness in that demography. Corneal topography is the gold standard for keratoconus diagnosis. It is a non-invasive process performed using expensive and bulky medical devices called corneal topographers.
