Ionic channels in corneal endothelium

The utility of the antiproliferative agent fluorouracil has been demonstrated recently in glaucoma-filtering surgery and in the management of proliferative vitreoretinopathy after vitrectomy. THE HEALING OF RABBIT CORNEAL ENDOTHELIUM

A circular 4 mm endothelial defect was induced by transcorneal freezing. The experimental damage and the healing took place in the living rabbit in 15 eyes, and in the isolated cornea in organ culture in further 20 eyes. The reparative process was studied by SEM, and proved to be the same in vivo and in vitro.

Effect of Urokinase on Corneal Endothelium

Urokinase in concentrations ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 units/mL was used to perfuse the corneal endothelium of rabbits for three hours in the specular microscope. No notable corneal swelling was noted, and the corneal endothelium appeared normal when observed with scanning electron microscopy.

The Effect of Corneal Stretch on the Endothelium

SUMMARY A model has been developed to describe the phenomenon of corneal stretch. In the model situation, suction is applied to the corneal surface of the bovine eye. The newly induced corneal shape forces the endothelial layer to stretch and sometimes to tear apart in places.

Effects of amantadine on corneal endothelium

An adverse effect of amantadine, a drug used for Parkinson's disease, is corneal edema. While corneal endothelial cell loss is noted with amantadine toxicity, the reversibility of corneal edema suggests that amantadine affects active mechanisms regulating corneal hydration.
