Coronaviridae: 100,000 Years of Emergence and Reemergence

open access: yes, 2020
The coronavirus family (Coronaviridae) is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA, with a size of 27 kb. These viruses have a potential species specificity and interspecies transmission. The interspecies transmission of viruses from one host species to another is a major factor responsible for the majority of emerging and reemerging infections.

Coronaviridae are enveloped RNA viruses which mature by budding into intracytoplasmic membranes. Coronaviruses cause respiratory and/or enteric infection in humans and many domestic animals (reviewed by Wegeet al., 1982). The prototype Coronavirus is avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV, Tyrrell et al., 1978).
