The physics of space weather/solar-terrestrial physics (STP): what we know now and what the current and future challenges are [PDF]

open access: yesNonlinear Processes in Geophysics, 2020
Major geomagnetic storms are caused by unusually intense solar wind southward magnetic fields that impinge upon the Earth's magnetosphere (Dungey, 1961). How can we predict the occurrence of future interplanetary events?

Predicting storm-time thermospheric mass density variations at CHAMP and GRACE altitudes [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2011
Orbit-averaged mass density measurements derived from the satellites CHAMP and GRACE are used to investigate the storm-time prediction model developed by Liu et al. (2010) at different altitudes.

Solar Energetic Particles Propagation under 3D Corotating Interaction Regions with Different Characteristic Parameters

open access: yesUniverse
Solar energetic particles (SEPs) are bursts of high-energy particles that originate from the Sun and can last for hours or even days. The aim of this study is to understand how the characteristics of energetic particles ware affected by the ...

Solar Origins of August 26, 2018 Geomagnetic Storm: Responses of the Interplanetary Medium and Equatorial/Low‐Latitude Ionosphere to the Storm

open access: yesSpace Weather, 2021
This study investigates the solar origins of August 26, 2018 geomagnetic storm and the responses of the interplanetary medium and equatorial/low‐latitude ionosphere to it. We used a multiinstrument approach, with observations right from the solar surface

Corotating interaction regions (CIRs): evolution over a solar lifetime

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
ABSTRACT Corotating interaction regions (CIRs) are persistent structures in stellar winds that arise from the interaction between fast and slow wind streams. They are known to generate shocks and high-energy particles, potentially influencing the erosion of planetary atmospheres and space weather conditions.

An event of extreme relativistic and ultra-relativistic electron enhancements following the arrival of consecutive corotating interaction regions: Coordinated observations by Van Allen Probes, Arase, THEMIS and Galileo satellites

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2022
During July to October of 2019, a sequence of isolated Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) impacted the magnetosphere, for four consecutive solar rotations, without any interposed Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections.

A Space Weather mission concept: Observatories of the Solar Corona and Active Regions (OSCAR)

open access: yesJournal of Space Weather and Space Climate, 2015
Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) are major sources of magnetic storms on Earth and are therefore considered to be the most dangerous space weather events. The Observatories of Solar Corona and Active Regions (OSCAR)

Earthward O+ Injections in the Plasma Sheet Boundary Layer During Geomagnetic Storms

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract During geomagnetic storms, energetic ions are injected from the Earth's magnetotail along the plasma sheet boundary layer (PSBL). Owing to its off‐equatorial inclined orbit, the Arase satellite is in a prime position to observe these injections in the PSBL on the nightside at the apogee.

The Effects of ICME Composition on the Sputtered Component of the Lunar Exosphere

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Charged‐particle sputtering is a fundamental process that contributes to the generation of the Moon’s neutral exosphere. Neutral sputtering rates are dependent on the speed, flux, and composition of the incident charged‐particle populations, all of which are variable at the Moon’s orbit.

Finding Novel Precursors for Solar Wind Stream Interaction Regions With Interpretable Deep Learning

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Solar wind stream interaction regions (SIRs) drive recurrent geomagnetic storms, yet most existing catalogs rely on expert inspection and simple thresholds that are subjective and can miss events with complex morphologies. We present SIREN (SIR Encoder Network), a lightweight Transformer‐based model for per‐timestep SIR detection from in situ ...
