Faking Sustainability, Facing Distress: Greenwashing and Corporate Default Risk

This paper explores whether and how greenwashing affects corporate default risk. Based on the data of US listed firms between 2013 and 2024, we find that enterprises with greenwashing behaviors have increased their risk of default.
