Initial steps of corrosion and oxide characteristics

Structural Concrete, 2020
AbstractSimulation of cracking of concrete cover due to reinforcement corrosion has attracted numerous investigations in recent years, although has been more scarce its experimental determination. Numerous works are based in accelerating testing because of the duration of natural processes.

The initiation of pitting corrosion of stainless steels at oxide inclusions

Corrosion Science, 1992
Abstract The initial stages of pit growth for stainless steel exposed in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 + 0.5 M NaCl + 0.08% H 2 O 2 at the free corrosion potential for 10 s have been examined by Auger and simultaneous EDX mapping and electron microscopy. This investigation was focussed on pits which initiated at mixed Al/Ti/Mn/Cr oxide inclusions.

Probabilistic evaluation of initiation time of chloride-induced corrosion

Reliability Engineering & System Safety, 2008
Abstract The paper presents a model for chloride ingress into concrete. The model accounts for two mechanisms which control the chloride ingress—diffusion and convection. Using one-dimensional (1-D) formulation of the model, the influence of chloride binding and ambient humidity on chloride ingress into concrete has been investigated.

On the Initiation of Crevice Corrosion on Stainless Steel

Journal of The Electrochemical Society, 1976
The site of crevice corrosion initiation on stainless steels has been investigated. It has been found that the initiation takes place at sulfide inclusions situated at the junction between a covering layer and the free metal surface with a portion of the inclusion covered and the rest exposed to the solution.

Modeling Chloride Diffusion and Corrosion Initiation

The objective of this study is to develop a multi-species model for chloride diffusion in saturated cementitious materials, taking into account all ions present in the pore solution, as well as ion-ion and ion-solid interactions, including mineral dissolution and precipitation phenomena.

Corrosion initiation and propagation in cracked concrete – a literature review

2011
The major degradation mechanism in civil engineering concrete structures is corrosion of reinforcement due to chloride penetration. Corrosion reduces serviceability and safety due to cracking and spalling of concrete and loss of steel cross section. Recently, service life design has moved from prescriptive performance based.

On Corrosion Fatigue Initiation from Notches and the Local Corrosion Fracture Approaches

2001
Corrosion fatigue emanating from semicircular notches is considered. The studies are focused on the relationship between stress field and electrochemistry in notches with the aim of understanding and prediction of the corrosion fatigue crack nucleation and growth behaviour from a notch surface.
