The thermodynamics of aqueous corrosion are considered and the importance of both anodic and cathodic processes is highlighted. The corrosion rate of aluminium in flowing neutral waters at 50°C has been determined as a function of pH, oxygen concentration and chloride concentration. The corrosion rate, At, as total aluminium lost between the 4th and 80th day was observed to be logarithmic according to At = B log t+C with a minimum rate in the pH range 5-6, and with B c.

The principles of the various corrosion rate-measuring instruments (3LP, Nippon Steel Company, and GECOR devices) are presented. The corrosion rate determined by these devices is compared with that obtained by standard electrochemical and nonelectrochemical corrosion rate-measuring methods.

Corrosion rate of steel in concrete: evaluation of confinement techniques for on-site corrosion rate measurements

Earlier on-site investigations and laboratory studies have shown that varying corrosion rates are obtained when different commercially available instruments are used. The different confinement techniques, rather than the different electrochemical techniques used in the instruments, are considered to be the main reason for the discrepancies.

Corrosion rate of titanium in H2SO4

Abstract The corrosion rates of titanium in 1–4 M H 2 SO 4 at temperatures of 298, 313 and 333 K were measured. It was found that etching in 5% HF strongly decreases the time for the passive-active transition (self-activation) of titanium in H 2 SO 4 and it was therefore used as an initial pretreatment for all samples.

Abstract A study of the limitations of the transient technique for measuring corrosion rates was made. For this purpose a galvanostat was built with an incorporated interrupter mechanism. The constant current was interrupted at a preselected frequency and the resulting discharge and charging curves of voltage against time displayed on an oscilloscope.

Most corrosion processes are electrochemical in nature, and in recent years increasing emphasis has been placed on electrochemical test methods. This report describes a new technique for using potentiostatically determined polarization curves which fulfills the requirements of a rapid electrochemical corrosion test.
