Cosmic ray studies with the MINOS detectors

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2008
The MINOS experiment uses two layered scintillator and steel detectors along with a muon neutrino beam to search for νμ disappearance, and thus neutrino oscillations. The Far Detector ('FD') is situated in a former iron mine in the Soudan Underground Mine State Park in Northeastern MN, 700 m (2070 mwe) below the surface.

Decoupling glacier retreat and surface stabilization on the Snežnik Plateau (Slovenia), insights from in situ cosmogenic 36Cl exposure and depth‐profile ages

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Glaciokarst landscapes pose distinctive challenges for cosmogenic dating because meltwater and runoff can be rapidly rerouted into ponors and conduit networks, weakening glacier–river coupling and promoting local sediment storage. We reconstruct glacier retreat and postglacial stabilization on the Snežnik Plateau (SW Slovenia) using in situ ...

The effects of atmosphere conditions on gamma-ray astronomy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The High Energetic Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) experiment is an array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov (IAC) telescopes of the next generation, with enlarged mirrors and advanced detector electronics compared to its predecessors.

Managing Spectral Intensity Variations With In‐Line Fiber‐Optic High‐Volume Noncontact Raman Probes: A Strategy Exploration

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
Robust quantification in noncontact Raman sensing requires dedicated correction of working distance dependent background effects, while laser power variations are readily stabilized using internal reference signals. Chemically relevant Raman intensity can be preserved for bulk composition measurements, under variable laser power and working distance ...

The identification of the cosmic-ray light nuclei with the GAPS experiment [PDF]

open access: yes
GAPS (General AntiParticle Spectrometer) is a balloon-borne large-acceptance experiment designed to detect low-energy (< 0.25 GeV/n) cosmic-ray antinuclei during three ∼35-day Antarctic flights, the first of these planned for the 2024-2025 austral ...

The HiSCORE Project

open access: yesActa Polytechnica CTU Proceedings, 2014
A central question of Astroparticle Physics, the origin of cosmic rays, still remains unsolved. HiSCORE (Hundred*i Square-km Cosmic ORigin Explorer) is a concept for a large-area wide-angle non-imaging air shower detector, addressing this question by ...

Discriminating Chemoresistant and Chemosensitive Tubo‐Ovarian High‐Grade Serous Carcinoma Cells With Raman Microscopy

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
Confocal Raman microscopy combined with multivariate analysis distinguishes cisplatin‐resistant and ‐sensitive tubo‐ovarian high‐grade serous carcinoma cell lines. ABSTRACT Chemoresistance is a major obstacle to effective cancer treatment, particularly in tubo‐ovarian high‐grade serous carcinoma (HGSC), the most lethal gynaecological malignancy ...

Models of DG‐Carbon Bands in Raman Spectra: Effects of Basis Functions and Initial Values on the Uniqueness and S/N of Fits Obtained for Atmospheric Aerosol Using Automated Methods

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
Raman spectra containing D/G features are fit using combinations of basis functions and initial conditions. Fits with two Lorentzian functions converged to a single optimized fit even with variation of initial peak positions. For five‐band fits, sometimes the final fit varied with initial conditions, and constraints on peak center position were ...

The Catalogue of Gamma-Ray Burst Observations by HEPD-01 in the 0.3–50 MeV Energy Range

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-01) on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite, located on a Sun-synchronous orbit at 500 km of altitude with an inclination of 97°, features a dedicated logic counting low-energy event rates, which proved
