Raman analysis of organic refractory materials after energetic processing: Evidence for amorphous carbon on TNOs and comets

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, EarlyView.
Abstract Amorphous carbon (αC) is found in various extraterrestrial particles, including those thought to originate from the outer Solar System. αC can form through two main processes involving C‐rich materials: exposure to energetic charged particles and thermal processing.

The lateral distribution of Cerenkov light in large cosmic ray showers as a measure of longitudinal development [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
This thesis reports measurements made on the longitudinal cascade of high energy cosmic ray showers using observations of atmospheric Cerenkov light. The lateral distribution of the Cerenkov light shower has been shown to be one of the measurable ground ...

Nanoscale space weathering features in mature lunar soil revealed by TEM and APT

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, EarlyView.
Abstract Space weathering significantly alters the optical, chemical, and structural properties of lunar regolith at micro‐ and nanoscales; yet detailed nanoscale variability within individual soils remains underexplored. Here we apply transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atom probe tomography to four mineral grains (olivine, ilmenite, and two ...

Use of neural network techniques to identify cosmic ray electrons and positrons during the 1993 balloon flight of the NMSU/Wizard-TS93 instrument

open access: yes, 1995
The detectors used in the TS93 balloon flight produced a large volume of information for each cosmic ray trigger. Some of the data was visual in nature, other portions contained energy deposition and timing information.

Human Destiny and the Natural Law in St Maximus the Confessor: A Contribution to Orthodox Christian Humanism

open access: yesModern Theology, EarlyView.
Abstract Orthodox Christian theology in general prides itself on bearing the mantle of patristic thought. Orthodox theological anthropology is no different, often drawing on Greek patristic sources in presenting its vision of the human being. Yet Orthodox anthropology can also broadly be categorized as personalist in ways that are not necessarily so ...

Very high energy gamma ray astronomy and non pulsating low mass x-ray binaries [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
This thesis is concerned with non pulsating Low Mass X-Ray Binaries as Very High Energy γ-ray sources, in particular Scorpius X-1; the brightest of these objects in X-rays, and the most likely to be detectable at energies above 250 GeV.

Background discrimination with a Micromegas detector prototype and veto system for BabyIAXO

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics
In this paper we present measurements performed with a Micromegas X-ray detector setup. The detector is a prototype in the context of the BabyIAXO helioscope, which is under construction to search for an emission of the hypothetical axion particle from ...

A new Anthropocene aesthetics: Mediating Harman, Morton, and Boysen

open access: yesOrbis Litterarum, EarlyView.
Abstract Practitioners of Object‐Oriented Ontology (OOO) have critiqued the metaphysical assumptions of contemporary poetry, and particularly the position of the lyric speaker. Scholars such as Graham Harman and Timothy Morton have positioned themselves as critics of these lyric sensibilities. In recent years, concerns have risen around their critiques

Photodegradation of commercial insect repellents containing DEET and IR‐3535 under ultraviolet light associated or not with chemical ultraviolet filters evaluated by Raman spectroscopy

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
This study evaluated the photodegradation of commercial insect repellents containing DEET and IR‐3535 under UV‐A and UV‐B irradiation using Raman spectroscopy. Pure DEET and IR‐3535 showed intrinsic photostability, whereas DEET diluted in ethanol and a commercial DEET‐based formulation exhibited significant spectral changes after UV exposure.
