Cross-correlation analysis for cosmic ray flux forecasting [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences
The study presents an effective approach for deriving and utilizing polarity-based cross-correlation functions to forecast Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) fluxes based on solar activity proxies.

Increasing urban flash flood risk attributable to both climate and development

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
A new event impact attribution methodology that combines convection‐permitting climate model data with flood inundation modelling was used for a five‐hour flash‐flooding event in the suburbs of Leeds in 2014. The results show increased urban flood extent due to both climate change (+16%) and increased urbanisation (+29%).

Limits on quark nugget dark matter from cosmic ray detectors

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2015
The purpose of this talk is to highlight the potential role of large scale cosmic ray detectors in constraining the presence of certain classes of high mass dark matter candidates.

The Evolution of Autonomous Systems for Planetary Cave Exploration: A Review

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The exploration of Subsurface Access Points (SAPs), such as lava tubes on the Moon and Mars, has gained significant interest due to their potential as stable environments shielded from surface radiation and temperature extremes. These sites are considered high‐value targets for detecting water and signs of ancient life, and assessing their ...

Periodic variation of anomalous cosmic ray oxygen during solar cycles 23 and 24 [PDF]

open access: yes
We investigate the evolution of the 152-156-day Rieger periodicity, the 27-day synodic rotation period and its 13.5 and 9-day harmonic periodicities in anomalous cosmic ray (ACR) oxygen (O) fluxes at the energy range between 8 - 25 MeV/n observed by the ...

From Flybys to Sample Return: A Review of Space Probes and Robotic Sampling Technologies for Small Bodies

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As a crucial puzzle piece of deep space exploration, exploring small bodies can provide significant scientific insights and valuable mineral resources. Unlike missions to the Moon and Mars, small‐body missions pose distinct technical challenges, including communication delays, weak gravity, and uncertain environments. This paper reviews a full

An In-depth Study of Gamma Rays from the Starburst Galaxy M82 with VERITAS

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Assuming Galactic cosmic rays originate in supernovae and the winds of massive stars, starburst galaxies should produce very-high-energy (VHE; E  > 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission via the interaction of their copious quantities of cosmic rays with the large ...

Strategies for Assessing Post‐Wildfire Geomorphic Resilience in Semiarid Rivers

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We review and summarize diverse components of a catchment that can be monitored after wildfire to assess the geomorphic resilience of the river corridor in semiarid regions. We distinguish upland portions of river catchments from river corridors.

Parallelizing Air Shower Simulation for Background Characterization in IceCube [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a cubic kilometer neutrino telescope located at the Geographic South Pole. For every observed neutrino event, there are over 106 background events caused by cosmic ray air shower muons.
