Marker based Thermal-Inertial Localization for Aerial Robots in Obscurant Filled Environments

open access: yes, 2019
For robotic inspection tasks in known environments fiducial markers provide a reliable and low-cost solution for robot localization. However, detection of such markers relies on the quality of RGB camera data, which degrades significantly in the presence

A Compact Spin‐Coated Graphene UWB Antenna for Breast Tumor Detection

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A compact, spin‐coated graphene ultra‐wideband patch antenna designed for breast tumor detection, capable of distinguishing between malignant and benign tumors. This innovative antenna can serve as an effective initial screening tool, particularly in resource‐limited settings such as rural areas, where access to advanced medical equipment like MRI and ...

Understanding recurrent crime as system-immanent collective behavior [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Containing the spreading of crime is a major challenge for society. Yet, since thousands of years, no effective strategy has been found to overcome crime. To the contrary, empirical evidence shows that crime is recurrent, a fact that is not captured well

Near‐Field Electrospinning Micro‐Printhead Achieves Precise Control of Nanofiber Deposition

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A micro‐printhead for near‐field electrospinning enables reproducible deposition of polymer nanofibers with diameters below 50 nm. Systematic parameter studies uncover the mechanisms linking operating conditions to fiber morphology, paving the way for precise and low‐cost nanoscale 3D manufacturing. As a high‐resolution, cost‐effective, and rapid ...

3D Reconstruction of a Precast Concrete Bridge for Damage Inspection Using Images from Low-Cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

open access: yesDisaster in Civil Engineering and Architecture
Early damage detection in bridges is fundamental to their continued safety, and therefore of utmost importance to the bridge managers and policy makers. The traditional visual inspection which is the common practice for bridge inspection is inefficient,

Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Do Inspection and Traceability Provide Incentives for Food Safety? [PDF]

open access: yes
One of the goals of inspection and traceability is to motivate suppliers to deliver safer food. The ability of these policies to motivate suppliers depends on the accuracy of the inspection, the cost of failing inspection, the cost of causing a foodborne

Secretary problems with inspection costs as a game

open access: yesMetrika, 1982
A “secretary problem” without recall, with given rewards and inspection costs is considered as a game of an opponent against a statistician. Probability distributions on the set of arrangements of the arrivals and randomized stopping rules are the strategies for the two players.

Characterization of Macro/Microstructure and Corrosion Resistance of Austenitic Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Cladding

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Cladding is a proven method that boosts the surface qualities of mechanical parts by applying a layer of more durable material over a base substrate. This work responds to the needs of offshore and pressure vessels sectors by focusing on cladding a super austenitic steel onto low‐carbon steel through gas tungsten arc welding.
