Electrolyte and Water Balance of the Early Avian Embryo: Effects of Egg Turning [PDF]
Formation of sub-embryonic fluid (SEF) is a key aspect of the physiology of the early avian embryo. Here we review the process of SEF formation and the factors which influence its composition and the rate of SEF production and depletion in the Japanese ...

Elevation, rather than land use, causes important dietary shifts in the Mediterranean golden eagle
In an ever‐changing landscape, golden eagles in the Iberian Peninsula demonstrate remarkable dietary adaptability. We monitored 50 distinct breeding events over 4 years using camera traps, collecting over 520 000 images. Elevation, rather than land use, emerged as the main driver of prey composition: lagomorphs and columbiforms dominated at lower ...

Spatial Orientation in Japanese Quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica)
Finding a given location can be based on a variety of strategies, for example on the estimation of spatial relations between landmarks, called spatial orientation. In galliform birds, spatial orientation has been demonstrated convincingly in very young domestic chicks. We wanted to know whether adult Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) without

This study found that over 10% of wild birds in Lahore, Pakistan, carry antibodies for Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite that can cause serious illness in humans and animals. Birds like lapwings and silver bills showed especially high antibody rates. Improved monitoring is needed to better understand risk dynamics in Pakistan.

Meadow birds on organic and conventional arable farms in the Netherlands: abundance and nest success [PDF]
Intensification of agriculture is mentioned to be the key drive behind the decline of farmland birds on grassland and on arable land. This raises the question whether a less intensive system, such as organic, can stop or reverse these declines.

This study investigated the dietary supplementation of different levels of Moringa oleifera leaf powder and its effect on growth performance, carcass and meat quality traits in Japanese quails. Dietary supplementation of Moringa oleifera leaf powder improved body weight of quails at 2 weeks of age; however, it did not affect the carcass, skin and meat ...

The pH and ionic composition of the sub-embryonic fluid of the Japanese quail (Coturnix c. japonica) [PDF]
The current theory of acid-base chemistry regards [H+] as a dependent variable: changes in pH of a fluid can only occur by alteration of strong ion concentrations ([Na+], [K+], [Cl-]).
