Body surface temperatures as biomarkers of physiological environmental adaptation in wild birds and mammals

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The ability of individuals to cope with their environment, and therefore the likelihood that they survive and pass on their genes (i.e. fitness), is largely determined by physiological state. Tracking physiological state in wild animals, however, is challenging.

Marek’s Disease in the Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)

open access: yesPoultry Science, 1973
When eighty families were exposed by contact to CR64 strain of acute Marek's disease virus (M.D.V.), IS families exhibited no lesions while all of the offspring in 3 families were affected. Gross and microscopic lesions of M.D. appeared when quail were 75 days of age (68 days post exposure).

Effects of nitrogen deposition on territory numbers of breeding birds

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Deposition of atmospheric N (nitrogen) is assumed to be a major cause of biodiversity decline in Europe. To date, few studies on the direct or indirect effects of N on bird species have been conducted. Using Swiss bird count data and habitat data, we analyzed the correlation of N deposition with numbers of territories of 112 breeding bird ...

Determining population trends and conservation status of the common quail (Coturnix coturnix) in Western Europe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper we review the conservation status and population trends of the common quail (Coturnix coturnix) from 1900 to the present. Data are sometimes contradictory with regard to the status of this species as it has some features that make it ...

Tryptophan in the Japanese quails diets in the rearing and laying periods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008

The hearing capabilities of the Dromornithidae (Aves), with inferences on acoustic communication and ecology

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
The preservation of bony structures which enclose the hearing organs (ECD) provide a basis for interpreting the hearing capabilities of the extinct, flightless Dromornithidae (Aves). Although the length of the dromornithid ECD was especially short, relative to basicranial length, it conformed to the negative allometric scaling relationships observed in

Desempenho de codornas de corte submetidas a diferentes níveis de proteína bruta e energia metabolizável Performance of meat-type quails subjected the different levels of crude protein and metabolizable energy

Assessment of long-range correlation in animal behaviour time series: the temporal pattern of locomotor activity of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix) and mosquito larva (Culex quinquefasciatus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of a classical method of fractal analysis, Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA), in the analysis of the dynamics of animal behavior time series. In order to correctly use DFA to assess the presence of

A Practical Method to Assess Bird Strike Risk in Air Operations Using a Count‐Based Risk Mitigation Tool

open access: yesRisk Analysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Bird strikes pose a risk to aviation. Collisions between birds and airplanes result in a threat to human lives, economic losses, and material damage. The majority of these collisions occur on airfields during takeoff and landing. Knowing what bird species are present on airfields, in what numbers, and relating that to the extent to which these
