Computational Analysis of the Vibrational Response of Lunar Regolith Made of Nonspherical Grains

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Vibration‐based systems have shown that appropriately oriented and tuned mechanical oscillations can disrupt regolith interlocking and promote flow. Building on this evidence, the present study investigates vibration‐controlled granular discharge as a potential ISRU (In Situ Resource Utilization) strategy, with the aim of supporting ...

Mapping finite-fault slip with spatial correlation between seismicity and point-source Coulomb failure stress change

open access: yes
Most earthquake energy release arises during fault slip many kilometers below the Earth's surface. Understanding earthquakes and their hazard requires mapping the geometry and distribution of this slip. Such finite-fault maps are typically derived from surface phenomena, such as seismic and geodetic ground motions.

Rearrangement Towards Stability: Plastic Shakedown in Granular Materials Under Thermal Cycles

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Granular materials are routinely subjected to thermal cycling due to natural and anthropogenic phenomena. Despite the ubiquity of this occurrence and its relevance for science, engineering, and technology, the long‐term thermo‐mechanical response of granular materials to repeated heating and cooling remains poorly understood.

Evaluation of failure criteria for rock under various stress states

open access: yes
The failure mode and strength of rock are often evaluated using failure criteria that (i) neglect the intermediate principal stress or (ii) examine conditions over a limited range ofmean stress.

Stress-corrosion failure mechanisms in soda-lime silica glass

open access: yes
The present work focuses on stress-corrosion mechanisms in soda-lime silica glass. Four-point beam-bending tests were performed on small specimens, measuring failure time in function of temperature and relative humidity.
