Efficient Probabilistic Forecasts for Counts
Summary Efficient probabilistic forecasts of integer-valued random variables are derived. The optimality is achieved by estimating the forecast distribution non-parametrically over a given broad model class and proving asymptotic (non-parametric) efficiency in that setting.

A Lossy Counting-Based State of Charge Estimation Method and Its Application to Electric Vehicles
Estimating the residual capacity or state-of-charge (SoC) of commercial batteries on-line without destroying them or interrupting the power supply, is quite a challenging task for electric vehicle (EV) designers.

Kinetic-inductance-limited reset time of superconducting nanowire photon counters
We investigate the recovery of superconducting NbN-nanowire photon counters after detection of an optical pulse at a wavelength of 1550 nm, and present a model that quantitatively accounts for our observations.

Distribution-Aware Sampling and Weighted Model Counting for SAT [PDF]
Given a CNF formula and a weight for each assignment of values to variables, two natural problems are weighted model counting and distribution-aware sampling of satisfying assignments. Both problems have a wide variety of important applications.

We explore the feasibility of using high conversion-efficiency periodically-poled crystals to produce photon pairs for photon-counting detector calibrations at 1550 nm. The goal is the development of an appropriate parametric down-conversion (PDC) source

True photo-counting statistics of multiple on-off detectors
We derive a closed photo-counting formula, including noise counts and a finite quantum efficiency, for photon number resolving detectors based on on-off detectors. It applies to detection schemes such as array detectors and multiplexing setups.

Single-photon detection timing jitter in a visible light photon counter [PDF]
Visible light photon counters (VLPCs) offer many attractive features as photon detectors, such as high quantum efficiency and photon number resolution. We report measurements of the single-photon timing jitter in a VLPC, a critical performance factor in ...

PPDC: A Privacy-Preserving Distinct Counting Scheme for Mobile Sensing
Mobile sensing mines group information through sensing and aggregating users’ data. Among major mobile sensing applications, the distinct counting problem aiming to find the number of distinct elements in a data stream with repeated elements, is ...

Direct measurement of carbon-14 in carbon dioxide by liquid scintillation counting [PDF]
Liquid scintillation counting technique is applied to the direct measurement of carbon-14 in carbon dioxide. This method has high counting efficiency and eliminates many of the basic problems encountered with previous techniques.
