Effect of Crack Closure on Magnitude of Modulated Wave

International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, 2020
Fatigue cracks generated by repeated loads cause structural failures. Such cracks grow continuously and at an increasing speed owing to the concentration of stresses near the crack tips. Therefore, the early detection of fatigue cracks is imperative in the field of structural-health monitoring for the safety of structures exposed to dynamic loading ...

A cumulative model of fatigue crack growth and the crack closure effect

International Journal of Fatigue, 1984
Abstract A model of fatigue crack growth based on an analysis of elastic/plastic stress and strain at the crack tip is presented. It is shown that the fatigue crack growth rate can be calculated using the local stress/strain at the crack tip by assuming that a small highly strained area x ∗ , existing at the crack tip, is responsible for ...

Microstructural effects on crack closure and propagation thresholds of small fatigue cracks

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 2001
The crack closure behaviour of microstructurally small fatigue cracks was numerically simulated by combining the crack‐tip slip band model with the plasticity‐induced crack closure model. A Stage II crack started to propagate from an initiated Stage I crack.

Effect of periodic bands of overloads on crack closure

International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping, 1989
Abstract Crack closure experiments were performed on 6061-T6 Al-alloy for various bands of overloads. These bands of overloads were applied after an interval of 10% CAL life from the beginning and after exhausting 50% CAL life. The sequence is almost constant amplitude loading with periodically inserted multiple overloads, which subsequently cause ...

Crack Closure and Overload Effects in Fatigue

1983
Observations of crack closure occurring during crack propagation in thin sheet materials under variable amplitude cyclic loading are discussed. The studies show that closure in the region immediately adjacent to the crack tip is important in controlling crack growth. From this basis, the Dugdale model and a simple fracture mechanics analysis is used to

Analysis of effects of crack closure in shells

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1989
Abstract The effect of crack closure in a shell was studied using the finite element method. Elastic open cylindrical shells, containing through-wall-thickness stationary cracks under bending loads, were considered. Crack closure was modeled using the line closure model.

Effect of Crack Closure on Quantitative ECT Inspection of Closed Fatigue Cracks

2008
In this paper, the feasibility to apply a closed fatigue crack as a substitute of a Stress Corrosion Crack (SCC) is investigated aiming at applications to ECT crack sizing. Several testpieces of closed fatigue cracks are fabricated, and ECT signals are measured after selected bending loads being applied to close the crack.

The effect of pre-strain on fatigue crack growth and crack closure

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1976
Abstract A single pre-strain ( ϵ = 0.03 ) applied to 2024-T3 material raised the static yield strength from 428 to 480 MN/m 2 . The growth rate of a fatigue crack in the pre-strained material was about twice as large as in the material that was not pre-strained.
