Compliance method to measure crack length and crack closure for automated fatigue crack propagation test of nanocrystalline nickel film

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2021
Abstract Experimental techniques for measuring the crack length and crack closure behavior of single edge crack tension [SE(T)] specimens with fixed ends were developed with compliance method employing a high-resolution laser displacement meter together with data processing for noise elimination.

On the unloading compliance method for crack length measurement

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1984
Abstract Unloading compliance tests have been performed on blunt notched Charpy specimens in order to quantify the extraneous displacements arising during unloading in a three point bend fracture toughness testing fixture. An expression is derived which quantifies the extraneous displacements and enables the unloading compliance to be accurately ...

Slot Machining Effects on Residual Stress Measurements Using the Crack Compliance Method

Journal of Testing and Evaluation, 2006
Abstract The main aim of this paper was to evaluate the practical aspects and compare two of the most common machining techniques employed in the crack compliance (incremental slitting) method for the determination of residual stresses, namely wire electrodischarge machining (WEDM) and circular abrasive saws.

Development of a contact compliance method to detect the crack propagation under fretting

Tribology International, 2006
Partial slip fretting conditions are classically known to favor contact crack nucleation and crack propagation. Considered as a plague for modern industries, numerous theoretical researches have been conducted during the past two decades to predict such fretting damage.

Comparison of Potential Drop and Unloading Compliance Methods in Determining Ductile Crack Extension

1985
Two different methods, the unloading compliance and the AC-potential drop method have been applied simultaneously for crack length measurement during ductile crack extension in J-R curve determinations. The materials used in the comparison of the two test methods were a pressure vessel steel A533B C1.1 (Unified Numbering System [UNI] K12539), a ...

Improvement of ASTM compliance offset method for precise determination of crack opening load

International Journal of Fatigue, 2009
There are two serious drawbacks to the ASTM offset method for determination of crack opening load, discontinuity and inconsistency problems. The former is the lack of opening load value in the lower 5% load range due to the procedure that the compliance offset is plotted against the mean load of the segment span of 10% of the cyclic load range.

Measurement of Residual Stresses Near the Surface Using the Crack Compliance Method

Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 1991
The use of thin cuts for residual stress measurement is referred to as the crack compliance method. A computational model is presented for the determination of normal and shear residual stresses near the surface by introducing shallow cuts. The optimum regions for strain measurement are obtained.

Study of the kinetics of fatigue cracks by the method of differential compliance

International Applied Mechanics, 1995
We constructed an analytical model of the loading of a specimen with a fatigue crack. We also designed instruments to detect a signal proportional to the change in the compliance (stiffness) of the test specimen. An instrument system was also developed to record the kinetics of cracks during long fatigue tests.

Compliance Ratio Method of Estimating Crack Length in Dynamic Fracture Toughness Tests

2002
Crack extension during fracture toughness tests of ferritic structural steels cannot be determined from measurements of unloading compliance or electric potential change when the specimen is dynamically loaded. Measurements of crack extension in fracture toughness tests are also very difficult when the test temperature is high or the test environment ...
