Solution of torsion crack problem of an orthotropic rectangular bar by using computing compliance method

Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1997
Summary: For a cracked orthotropic torsion bar, the torsion compliance \(C\) is evaluated numerically. The dependence of the compliance \(C\) on the crack length gives the stress intensity factor at the crack tip. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the influence of the elastic material constants of orthotropic materials.

Automated real-time measurements of fatigue crack length and crack opening load using unloading elastic compliance method

International Journal of Fatigue, 1997
Abstract A system has been developed to measure crack length and crack opening load automatically in real time without changing any testing condition, by using an unloading elastic compliance method. The crack opening load is determined by a unique method using differential displacement signal data.

A modified compliance method for fatigue crack propagation applied on a single edge notch specimen

International Journal of Fatigue, 2016
Abstract Crack length measurements with high accuracy are often difficult to achieve during fatigue crack propagation testing under non-isothermal conditions. In this work a modified approach to the compliance method defined in e.g. ASTM E647 is described, which is better suited for high loads, varying temperatures and for taking the scatter in ...

Evaluation of fatigue crack growth behavior of GLARE3 fiber/metal laminates using a compliance method

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2003
Abstract The objectives of this study were to investigate the effectiveness of a compliance method for analyzing the fatigue crack growth of GLARE3 fiber/metal laminates. The materials tested were GLARE3-5/4 (2.6 mm thick) and GLARE3-3/2 (1.4 mm thick). Centrally notched specimens with two kinds of notch length and two kinds of fiber orientation were

Residual Stress Measurement by Successive Extension of a Slot: The Crack Compliance Method

Applied Mechanics Reviews, 1999
This article reviews the technical literature on the determination of a residual stress profile by successive extension of a slot and measurement of the resulting strains or displacements. This technique is known variously in the literature as the crack compliance method, the successive cracking method, the slotting method, and a fracture mechanics ...

Applicability of the ASTM compliance offset method to determine crack closure levels for structural steel

International Journal of Fatigue, 2007
The usefulness of the compliance offset method recommended by the ASTM standard to estimate crack closure in structural steel is examined. The local and remote compliance data generated in fatigue tests on a structural steel conducted under a variety of loading conditions enabled to choose an optimal strain gauge positioning and most appropriate offset

Application of the crack compliance method to long axial cracks in pipes with allowance for geometrical nonlinearity and shape imperfections (dents)

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2008
Abstract Application of the crack compliance method to the analysis of thin-walled rings with a radial crack has two features: a crack is considered as a concentrated angular compliance and the deformation of all other sections of the rings is calculated as for a curvilinear beam.

Residual Stress Measurement in Cracked Components: Capabilities and Limitations of the Cut Compliance Method

Materials Science Forum, 2000
The cut compliance method is a powerful experimental tool to measure residual stress distributions. Based on fundamental theoretical relations of liner-elastic fracture mechanics, it is particularly well suited to be applied to components that contain cracks, since it delivers not only the residual stress-field but the stress intensity factor due to ...

Effect of strain hardening on residual stress distribution in beams determined using the crack compliance method

The Journal of Strain Analysis for Engineering Design, 2007
This work used the crack compliance method for the determination of residual stresses in beams subjected to prior straining before the introduction of residual stresses through bending. The paper also introduces a support system that allows free movement of specimens during cutting by electric discharge machining.

Residual Stresses in Beams (With and Without Prior History) Numerically Assessed by the Crack Compliance Method

Strain, 2011
Abstract:  This work assesses the Crack Compliance Method (CCM) by the Finite Element Method (FEM). The CCM is a very powerful method that is based on Fracture Mechanics Theory. Its experimental application and set up is validated by this work. The numerical assessment of the CCM is performed on bending beams with and without prior straining history ...
