Crack Gages for Detecting Fatigue Crack Initiation
Journal of Structural Engineering, 1987The use of fatigue crack gages is examined, in order to provide a clear indication of fatigue crack inititation and early subscritical crack growth in structural steel details. The crack gage consists of a thin steel coupon that can be bonded to a structural member in the vicinity of a known stress raiser, such as at the end of a cover plate or near a ...

Industry Chimney Crack Detection
2023Industrial chimneys are used extensively by many sectors; thus, regular inspections are necessary to ensure both long-term operation and environmental safety.Conventional inspection techniques, which depend on manual labour, have shown to be risky, time-consuming, and prone to mistakes.

Crack detection with gas-coupled laser acoustic detection technique
Measurement Science and Technology, 2021Abstract Gas-coupled laser acoustic detection (GCLAD) is an unestablished ultrasonic detection technique based on the displacement that a laser beam sustains when intersected by an acoustic wave travelling in a fluid. In the present work, GCLAD for the noncontact detection of ultrasound is applied to identify surface defects on metal ...

Crack detection has drawn much attention in the last two decades, because of dramatic bloom in monitoring images and the urgent need of corresponding crack detection. However, recent methods have not taken advantage of structure information effectively, resulting in low accuracy when dealing with crack-like noises.

Optical method for fatigue crack detection
Applied Optics, 1980A 1-D optical Fourier spectrum analyzer system is used to detect fatigue cracks as small as 0.5 microm in titanium test samples. Signatures obtained from scans of reflected laser light diffraction patterns show features linked to the presence of surface cracks.
