Comparing dynamic crack initiation and crack arrest

Abstract The temperature dependences of dynamic crack initiation and crack-arrest toughnesses are compared and found to differ significantly. It is suggested that the reason for this difference arises from the differences in crack morphology associated with the two phenomena.

Micromechanisms of Crack Initiation and Crack Propagation

After summarizing fracture mechanics parameters the paper introduces micromechanical models of cleavage fracture. It is shown that cleavage can be interpreted in terms of the local tensile stress required to propagate micro-cracks. Methods to determine the microscopic cleavage stress are presented.
