How brittle is brittle fracture?

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1979
Abstract A critical survey is given of what appear to be the basics of the field of fracture mechanics. The survey is certainly not exhaustive and is approached from the viewpoint and with the pre-suppositions of a “materials” as opposed to a “mechanics” person.

Atomistic Aspects of Brittle Fracture

MRS Bulletin, 2000
The mechanical properties of materials are ultimately determined by events occurring on the atomic scale. In the case of brittle fracture, this connection is obvious, since the crack in a perfectly brittle material must be atomically sharp at its tip.

The Brittle Fracture of Polycrystalline Zinc

Key Engineering Materials, 2007
In polycrystalline materials grain boundaries provide an important contribution to the resistance to the propagation of both brittle and ductile cracks. In this paper we describe experimental measurements of brittle cracks developed within both small punch and matchstick test specimens of polycrystalline hcp zinc.

Meshless simulation of brittle fracture

Computer Animation and Virtual Worlds, 2011
AbstractWe propose a meshless method to simulate brittle fracture. For brittle solids, stress computation can be difficult because brittle materials generally require small timesteps which bring about heavy computational burden. Furthermore, treating the brittle objects as deformable bodies will cause inevitable visual artifact.
