Crack initiation and crack propagation in partially electroded PZT
Journal of the European Ceramic Society, 2001For partially electroded piezoelectric materials, a strain incompatibility arises between the electrically active part and the electrically inactive part of the material. This can lead to crack initiation and crack propagation perpendicular to the electrode edge.

Crack Initiation Mechanism of Hydrogen Induced Cracking in Nickel
Key Engineering Materials, 2019Cracks are induced during hydrogen charging in Nickel. We have reported that the cracks initiate near the boundary between nickel matrix and nickel hydride formed near the surface by hydrogen charging. The driving force is considered to be residual stress caused by hydride formation.

Crack initiation and growth in brittle bonds
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2003A fracture mechanics based analysis of the strength of a bond between a thin plate and a substrate is presented. The bond edge is regarded as a crack front, which is loaded under combined mode I, II and III conditions. A numerical procedure is used to study crack initiation and growth.

On crack-tip cooling during dynamic crack initiation
International Journal of Solids and Structures, 2001Abstract This paper presents a hybrid experimental–numerical treatment of the transient thermoelastic effects around a crack tip, subjected to a dynamic loading. A simple numerical procedure was devised to calculate the transient crack-tip temperature field, in a “one-way” coupled approach.

Crack-Tip-Acuity Effect on Crack Growth Initiation
Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 1987For a stationary crack of an initially finite root radius in plane-strain tension, the strain fields around the smoothly blunted crack-tip are calculated for each deformation stage using the slipline field method for nonhardening plastic material. The crack growth initiation from the blunt crack-tip in small-scale yielding, with a full triaxiality ...

The influence of geometry of edge-cracked plates on crack initiation
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1987Abstract In this paper the influence of geometry of edge-cracked plates on crack propagate under mixed mode loading conditions is studied. The edge-cracked plates under tension are examined. The crack extension angle and the critical stress of fracture are determined for various values of the crack inclination angle and the ratio of the crack length ...

Crack Initiation and Failure Mechanism of Granite with Single Crack
Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, 2019Damage identification and localization of cracked rock in underground tunnel and slope engineering is the widely and important research topic. Stress, strain and acoustic emission sensors installed on the pre-cracked real rock samples are used to reveal the crack initiation behavior and fracture mechanism under the uniaxial compression.

Nonarbitrary Crack Size Concept for Fatigue Crack Initiation
2005Abstract This appendix presents an analytical model that estimates damage rates for both crack initiation and propagation mechanisms. The model provides a nonarbitrary definition of fatigue crack initiation length, which serves as an analytical link between initiation and propagation analyses and appears to have considerable merit in ...

Hydride Cracks as Initiators for Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zircaloys
1979Examination of specimens from one batch of Zircaloy fuel cladding that had been partially cracked in iodine vapor at 300°C has shown small fractured hydrides at the initiation sites of the transgranular stress corrosion cracking (SCC) process. Investigation showed that small radial hydrides were present at the inside surface of the original tubing and ...
