The models of crack growth in mixed mode conditions are reviewed for the plane and three-dimensional (3D) states of stress. Both critical load value and crack path or surface growth are predicted by different criteria in terms of elastic singular stress states and T-stress component. Monotonic and cyclic loading induced crack growth is considered.

In responsible elements of the planes, bridges and other constructions from metal and composite materials the stress state in the tips of crack is mixed type. At that the conditions of rectilinear growth of a crack are violated as shown by numerous observations and experiments.

Abstract Crack paths are discussed from several different points of view. The remarkable reproducibility of crack paths, especially the frequent occurrence of straight cracks, is considered. The general dominance of mode I growth at mixed mode loading (via kinking or tilting of the crack edge) is examined, and it is shown that mode I growth can be ...

Determination of Fatigue Crack Paths
International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 1997The complete solution of the problem of a fatigue crack growing from an initial crack includes determination of the crack path. Macroscopic aspects of the main features of the path taken by a growing fatigue crack in a metallic material are reasonably well understood in a qualitative sense.

Theoretical crack path prediction
Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 2004ABSTRACTIn many practical cases, the crack growth leads to abrupt failure of components and structures. For reasons of a reliable quantification of the endangerment due to sudden fracture of a component, therefore, it is of enormous importance to know the threshold values, the crack paths and the growth rates for the fatigue crack growth as well as the

Crack path stability in cracked panel
Journal of the Chinese Institute of Engineers, 2004Abstract The prediction of the crack growth path plays a significant role in the estimation of the final shape of broken solids and structures. Furthermore, the study of the crack path in broken specimens renders the loading conditions just before fracture.

Path stability of a crack with an eigenstrain
Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, 2006A slightly curved crack with an eigenstrain is considered. Solutions for a slightly curved crack in a linear isotropic material under asymptotic loading as well as for a slightly curved crack in a linear isotropic material with a concentrated force are obtained from perturbation analyses, which are accurate to the first order of the parameter ...

Abstract The main features of the path taken by a propagating fatigue crack are discussed. It is assumed that a material is homogeneous and isotropic on a macroscopic scale, that behaviour is essentially elastic, and that the initial crack is ‘long’. Under these conditions the path taken by a propagating fatigue crack is reasonably well understood in

The linear elastic analysis of cracked bodies, crack paths and some practical crack path examples
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2016Abstract The linear elastic analysis of cracked bodies is a Twentieth Century development, with the first papers appearing in 1907. The stress intensity factor concept, introduced in 1957, developed rapidly in the 1960s, with widespread application to practical problems. Finite element analysis had a significant influence on the development of linear

In relation to fatigue crack growth, it is observed that long cracks under mixed mode loading conditions branch to follow the direction along which \(\Delta k_{\text{II}}\) is zero, but some results against this local symmetry criterion are also reported.
