Curved crack propagation

International Journal of Fracture, 1979
While currently used criteria for onset of crack propagation in a mixed mode loading situation give different predictions for the angle of incipient branching, the present paper demonstrates that the trajectory of a curved crack to a large extent is independent of the choice among these criteria.

Theory of propagation of cracks

Journal of Engineering Mathematics, 1975
The criterion for the plastic flow of crystalline solids is well established but a similar criterion for the fracture of brittle solids under triaxial stress conditions has not been proposed so far. According to the present theory, brittle fracture occurs as the result of the formation and subsequent propagation of microcracks.

On the nonsteady propagation of cracks

Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, 1962
Abstract Investigations of the processes of crack propagation have continued now for a considerable period of time, and it would be fair to say that in the field of stationary propagation of cracks the investigations have more or less reached completion.

Further Studies of Crack Propagation Using the Controlled Crack Propagation Approach

1974
In a previous paper, a new fracture-toughness-measuring technique was presented which made it possible to evaluate the functional relationship between load and cracklength at the moment of crack initiation or arrest. It was demonstrated that this relationship is directly relatable to the strain energy release rate and experimental results were ...

Crack Formation and Propagation

MRS Bulletin, 1989
After Griffith's explanation of the decrease in the strength of a loaded material containing a disbonded area (a crack), it took about another quarter century before “Fracture Mechanics” as an engineering discipline became established. At that time it was the catastrophic failure of the Liberty ships and the basic contributions by Irwin2 that created a

Simulation of Crack Propagation

2014
We shall consider the simulation-based fracture control design. It is well known that the simulation of the formation of brittle or fatigue cracks is essential for the precise evaluation of fracture modes and fracture processes, so that several numerical simulation systems could be developed based on the finite element method, meshless method, and/or ...

Quasistatic Propagation of Cracks

2003
The problem of shape perturbation for the variational inequality describing solids with cracks under the nonpenetration condition is considered. There are used the iteration-penalty and finite-element methods to calculate numerically an approximate solution of the variational inequality.
