Effects of cryogenic temperature and grain size on fatigue-crack propagation in the medium-entropy CrCoNi alloy

open access: yes, 2020
CrCoNi-based high-entropy alloys have demonstrated outstanding mechanical properties, particularly at cryogenic temperatures. Here we investigate the fatigue-crack propagation properties of the equiatomic, single-phase, face-centered cubic, medium ...

Crack-size and crack-orientation distributions of brittle materials.

open access: yesTRANSACTIONS OF THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS Series A, 1989
In this report, we derived a new theory by combining the previously obtained statistical theory fracture location with the multiaxial distribution function. Using this theory, we analysed not only 3 crack-size ditribution function but also the crack-orientation distribution. Both distribution function are considerably affected by the fracture criteria.

Application of proper orthogonal decomposition and radial basis functions for crack size estimation using particle swarm optimization

open access: yes, 2017
Complex engineering problems require simulations, which are computationally expensive in cases of inverse identification tasks since they commonly requires hundreds of thousands of simulations.

The effects of grain size, dendritic structure and crystallographic orientation on fatigue crack propagation in IN713C nickel-based superalloy

open access: yesInternational journal of plasticity, 2020
The polycrystalline IN713C produced via investment casting is one of the widely-used nickel-based superalloy in automotive and aerospace industries. This alloy, however, has an apparent inhomogeneous microstructure generated during casting and contains ...

Influences of Residual Stress, Surface Roughness and Peak-Load on Micro-Cracking: Sensitivity Analysis

open access: yesMetals, 2021
This paper provides further understanding of the peak load effect on micro-crack formation and residual stress relaxation. Comprehensive numerical simulations using the finite element method are applied to simultaneously take into account the effect of ...

Resonant Scattering and Crack Sizing

open access: yes, 1985
Theoretical consideration of ultrasonic scattering from interior cracks has received considerable attention in recent years. These studies have led to scattering amplitude computations for ultrasonic backscatter from circular cracks by the method of optimal truncation (MOOT) (1, 2) and by T-matrix techniques (3).

Influences of crystal orientations and grain boundary on crack propagation behaviour at room temperature in a polycrystalline Ni-base superalloy

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2018
Fatigue crack propagation in a polycrystalline Ni-base superalloy was experimentally investigated at room temperature. Fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted under a constant ΔK condition to clarify the effect of grains crystal orientation, grain

Particle- and crack-size dependency of lithium-ion battery materials LiFePO 4

open access: yes, 2016
Lithium-ion batteries have become a widely-used commodity for satisfying the world’s mobile power needs. However, the mechanical degradation of lithium-ion batteries initiated by micro cracks is considered to be a bottleneck for advancing the current ...

Numerical method for estimating fatigue crack initiation size using elastic–plastic fracture mechanics method

open access: yesApplied Mathematical Modelling, 2019
To solve the fatigue crack initiation problem, it is necessary to calculate the fatigue crack initiation size. According to the aspect of macroscopic crack development, the calculation method of crack initiation size is determined by the critical ...
